Dance Choreography

OBJECTIVES

Dance Choreography is designed for the student with some previous dance experience or related skills such as yoga, gymnastics. It will give an in-depth practical experience in performing, choreographing and some teaching (optional) The course will have a focus on creative dance composition but will also include an introduction to other styles such as modern technique, jazz and hip hop. Group discussion, supportive feedback and the use of videos are central to the course.

OUTCOMES

  1. The instructor will teach composition skills that the students will utilize to begin creating short choreographic studies.
  2. The students will also teach their peers selected skills from a range of dance styles and techniques.
  3. Weekly Labs will be held to gain: a comprehensive study of movement themes, to choreograph and to work in small groups.
  4. Students will be exposed to a broad spectrum of production elements through seminar discussion, film and hands on experience.
  5. The course will culminate in each student being involved in choreographing a duet  dance, as well as a collective choreography in a group.  The final assignment will be a solo piece.
