Congratulations to the Oak Bay Rowing Crew on a very successful first regatta this weekend!
The Oak Bay Open 8 — featuring Jefferson Creek, Rowan Lawlor, Charlotte Erickson, Liam Swatatzky, Logan Weaver, Kuzey Yayley, Sienna Garmin, Abby Jang, and Lily Morris — captured first place with a strong victory over GNS and SMUS. This crew is looking powerful heading into the City Championships.
The Novice 8 Crew — Bill Bu, Lucas Kim, Michael Dunne, Lucas Bixby, Owen Johnson, Alex Bakkedeh, Wave Ander, Noah Freeman, and Lion Finn — finished third in a very tight race.
Our Novice Quad Crew — Lucas Kim, Alex Bakkedeh, Noah Freeman, and Lion Finn — also had a great showing, taking second place in their class.
It was an excellent weekend of rowing for the Oak Bay team! We’re looking forward to City Champs on November 1, where we’ll aim to finish the season strong.

Interested in joining the Oak Bay Ski & Snowboard Team this season? Come to our first team meeting, happening at lunch time on Wednesday, October 8th, in the Choir room. This is an important meeting for new and returning athletes.

Leadership is organizing a Mustard Seed Food Drive for October. Bring non-perishable items to the boxes located in your classroom or outside the office. Grade 9s, the class that brings in the most items will win a prize. 

There will be a Police Camp presentation in the Career Centre at lunch on October 14thPolice Camp 2026 will be the first week of Spring Break, Saturday, March 14 to Saturday, March 21st.   It is an eight-day leadership program for students from grades 10-12.  Camp will be held at St Margaret’s School, like last year.  Come by to learn more!  Click here to see the poster with more details.  https://oakbaycareercentre.weebly.com/news–events

UVIC AND CAMOSUN INFORMATION EVENING

Forum for Young Canadians
Applications are now open for the 2026 Forum for Young Canadians National Summit.  Forum 2026 will welcome 300 youth (aged 15-18) from across Canada to Ottawa for three week-long sessions of behind-the-scenes access to Parliament Hill, conversations with decision-makers, and hands-on simulations of the democratic process.  The program dates are February 8-13, 2026, March 8-13, 2026 and March 22-27, 2026.   Applications close October 26, 2025  https://forum.ca/apply.

UVic Gustavson School of Business has scheduled a series of workshops for the fall.  AI 101: using artificial intelligence in university and your career, Entrepreneurship 101: what makes a good side-hustle?, and Finance 101: personal finance for students preparing for college and university.  To attend any of these, students can register here.  BCom workshops – Gustavson School of Business – UVic

Volunteering Opportunities

If you are looking for volunteer hours for grad, consider child minding at Sundance-Bank Elementary School, 1623 Bank St.  Parents will be on site in a Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) meeting while you play games and keep the children busy with fun activities.  There are four dates that they need your assistance.  Oct. 8th 6:15-8:00pm, January 14, April 8, and May 13.  If you are interested, please see Ms. Giesbrecht in the Career Centre to sign up.  

ReStore is looking for volunteers. They have two locations – Victoria ReStore at 721 Vanalman Avenue, and Westshore ReStore at 849 Orono Avenue.  Both stores support Habitat Victoria helping to raise funds for local working families to achieve affordable homeownership in our local communities.  ReStores are open 7 days per week, with a particular need for weekend volunteers – Student volunteer shifts are 2-4 hours between 9:00am – 5:00pm (11:00am – 5:00pm on Sundays).  Students are welcome to request specific shifts, and we can be very flexible for the most part.   More specifics on this can be discussed at time of application.   They ask that students commit to at least their full 30 hours with us (100 for WEX). On the job training is provided.  Anyone under 19 years must have parent/guardian permission.  16+ only.  Volunteers must be able to work independently, follow direction, and also collaborate with employees and other volunteers.   • Receiving and sorting donations
  • Cleaning and tagging donations
  • Merchandising the store floor
