Today is transgender day of remembrance.
This day has been recognized since 1999, one year after Rita Hester was murdered for being transgender. This day was first acknowledged by Gwendolyn Ann Smith, when a vigil was held to remember the murder and hate crimes that continue against trans people. Since 1998
things have improved, for example in 2017 gender identity and expression was formally protected by the Canadian charter of human rights. Today is a day of remembering and mourning for all trans and gender diverse people lost due to discrimination and hate.

Oak Bay High Talent Show is on November 25th at 6:00 PM. Showcase your talents! Sign up via QR code on the posters around the school.
There is a book drive happening now until November 28th. Please bring books for the boxes. All proceeds go to Women’s Transition House.
Starting this week, we will begin Theme Song Friday. You and your block A class will have to guess the song on the announcements, and email your response to Mr. Zolbrod. The class that responds the quickest will win, so be speedy. The top 3 will get points, overall winner will get a prize at the end of the semester.
The Art & Culture Trip will be selling Pizza on Friday at lunchtime to fundraise for next summer’s trip.
The Senior Theatre Company proudly presents Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice, running on the 17th and 18th of December. Doors open at 6:30, curtain up at 7 pm. $5 for Students and seniors, $10 for Adults. Tickets available online or with cash at the door.
The Interact Club will be running a concession (by donation) during intermission, with the proceeds going to The Victoria Transition House. Cash is preferred, but there will be a machine available, too.

The Swim Team had a great showing at Provincials in Richmond this past weekend, with the final results of 10th in the Mixed Medley relay, 4th in the Mixed Freestyle Relay, and 15th for Rowan Lawlor in 100m IM! Congratulations to the whole team for a very successful season.
Shad 2026 – Are you a Grade 10 or 11 student who loves science, technology, creativity, or solving real-world problems?
Shad is a 27-day summer program where you live on a university campus, explore hands-on STEAM projects, and work with students from across Canada on an exciting design challenge. You’ll visit labs, meet inspiring mentors, build new skills, and become part of a national network of more than 20,000 alumni. If you’re curious, motivated, or looking for something that will set you apart for university and scholarships, Shad is an amazing opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and see what you’re capable of. Drop by and ask questions at the table set up outside the Career Centre at lunch on Nov. 25th.
UBC Women in Engineering (WiE) is launching a 2025-2026 Engineering Online Workshop Series. The UBC WiE Online Workshop Series strives to increase female* high school students’ access to engineering and help students explore what engineering is and has to offer. There will be at least three workshops in this online series, which runs from November through March. Past workshops have included an application workshop, an introduction to coding, and an introduction to computer-aided design (CAD). The first workshop is our application workshop, which will take place on Thursday, November 20th, at 7 pm in collaboration with the UBC Applied Science department. We ask that students fill this form out by Wednesday, November 19th if they intend on attending the first workshop, but they are welcome to join the program at any point and attend whichever workshops interest them. All workshops will be online, and recordings will be distributed following each event. If students have any questions, they are more than welcome to reach out at wiecommittees@gmail.com.

Go ENG Girl is a national event held by Universities across Canada, designed to introduce high school girls, non-binary, and gender-diverse youth to the world of engineering. Volunteering Opportunities
Greater Victoria Green Team is looking for volunteers for several days in November and December to help improve the environment. You will have an opportunity to plant native species and remove different invasive species. This is the type of volunteering that all students, including international students, can take part in. ReStore is looking for volunteers. They have two locations – Victoria ReStore at 721 Vanalman Avenue, and Westshore ReStore at 849 Orono Avenue. Both stores support Habitat Victoria, helping to raise funds for local working families to achieve affordable homeownership in our local communities. ReStores are open 7 days per week, with a particular need for weekend volunteers. Student volunteer shifts are 2-4 hours between 9:00 am – 5:00 pm (11:00 am – 5:00 pm on Sundays). Students are welcome to request specific shifts, and we can be very flexible for the most part. More specifics on this can be discussed at the time of application. They ask that students commit to at least their full 30 hours with us (100 for WEX). On-the-job training is provided. Anyone under 19 years must have a parent/guardian’s permission. 16+ only. ReStore volunteer duties can include, but are not limited to:
- Receiving and sorting donations
- Cleaning and tagging donations
- Merchandising the store floor
- Keeping the store clean and tidy
- Moving furniture and merchandise
