Graphic Design Summer Program Grade 10 or 11 students (up to 18 spots available)
SD61 and Pacific Design Academy (PDA) are working in partnership to deliver a program providing a blend of classroom-based instruction, software training, skill development, and work experience (if possible). The program will provide students with the opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding within the graphic design industry, exploring conceptual thinking, typography, and design fundamentals. Students will also become familiar with Adobe Creative Cloud, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. Upon successful completion, students will receive 4 high school credits: Graphic Production 12
Classroom and community-based Instruction will be taught at Pacific Design Academy, Monday – Friday, 9:00am – 3:30pm from July 2, 2025 to July 29th, 2025. The applications are due by April 18th. See Ms. Giesbrecht in the Career Centre for more information and an application if you are interested.
The Oak Bay Ski and Snowboard teams have won all four Island Championship titles. The boys’ snowboard team swept the podium as individuals, with Mackenzie White in first place, Calum Parker in second, and Kiyoshi McMillan in third. Congratulations to Kennedy Palmer for her second place individual finish, helping the girls’ snowboard team be named Island Champs! Captain Yoyo Deng led the boys’ ski team to victory, finishing second as an individual. Grade 9 Freya Bayley was Oak Bay’s fastest girls’ skier, finishing second on the island, and helping Oak Bay secure another Island Champs title. Congratulations to all racers! Good luck at Provincials in Quesnel at the end of the month!

Youth Empowering Youth is offering a unique free leadership development program for students. Students who participate in the program will earn 15 volunteer hours.
The program provides young leaders with an opportunity to develop essential skills such as teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and leadership. Through workshops, mentorship, and real-world projects, students will not only enhance their personal growth but also make a positive impact in their community. Go Eng Girl at UVic is a free event on Saturday, Feb. 15th from 10 am to 3 pm that introduces girls and non-binary youth to the growing world of engineering. Learn more about the different types of engineering through a series of fun hands-on activities and exhibits. Compete in design challenges, talk to industry professionals, and connect with peers and mentors. “Understanding Arts and Design Schools in the U.S.”, February 13th at 4:15 PM PT. This session will provide valuable insights into the wide range of opportunities available at art and design schools across the U.S. The webinar will last approximately 40-45 minutes, followed by a 15–20-minute Q&A session. Grade 10 and 11 students looking for a fun, educational experience this summer can apply to McGill Summer Academy (MSA) a two-week academic summer camp held on McGill University’s downtown campus. With classes in the morning, opportunities to explore the city in the afternoon, and the chance to make friends from all over the world, MSA is a great way for students to spend an unforgettable two weeks in Montreal.
They offer two streams: Pathways to Neuro and Health Sciences and Understanding Migration, Global Citizenship and Diasporic Resistance. Participants will develop their academic interests through coursework, skill-building activities, and experiential learning, all led by McGill faculty and graduate students. They’ll leave MSA with new, lifelong friendships and the confidence to apply to the university of their dreams!
Program dates are July 6 – July 19 and July 20 – August 2. The application deadline is March 1st. Get more details and access to the application on the McGill Summer Academy website.
Grade 9-12 students can register for FREE for the virtual Green Collar Futures Career Conference on Saturday, March 1, 2025. Space is VERY LIMITED so students can register online now. Students MUST be registered by February 25, 2025 (or earlier as spaces will fill up) to attend this event. Volunteering Opportunities
The TD Family Sport and Recreation Festival hosted by PISE and the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame will be happening at PISE on Saturday, May 3rd from 11am – 3:00pm. This is a FREE event for the community! The event will take place at PISE at Camosun College Interurban Campus 4371 Interurban Rd. It is a chance for kids to be introduced to new opportunities at the club and community level. This event is all about connecting families through sport and physical activity. It is the only festival of its kind in our region and also offers many activity options for children with disabilities. With more than 30 activities, including a variety of sports, outdoor activities, obstacle courses, as well as food and beverage vendors, there will be opportunities for children and families of all sizes to interact with sport organizations and participate in a variety of events. This year we are looking forward to welcoming around 2,000 participants, primarily children and their parents and grandparents to the festival.
