There is a meeting for all grade 9 & 10 girls interested in playing basketball for Oak Bay this Thursday at lunch in the gym

No Junior boys’ basketball tryouts on Thursday. We will now practice Friday at 5pm in the big gym. 

There will be a Pumpkin Carving  Contest today on the pavement outside the Cafeteria at lunch!  Bring a friend and join a friendly competition for a prize!

Reminder, today and tomorrow are the last days to buy tickets for the Halloween Dance!  It’s happening Thursday night, October 27th from 7:00 – 10:00 PM.  TICKETS WILL NOT BE SOLD AT THE DOOR.

Students, please check the Numeracy & Literacy Assessment lists posted outside the office and Cafeteria for you to see when and where you will be writing.  Make sure to check both lists, you might be writing 2 assessments.

Do you wish there was an Anime club here at Oak Bay? Come join Mr. Mercer today at lunch in room 221 for a short meeting if you’re interested and we’ll make it happen.

Grade 9’s please hand in your Take your Kids to Work Day forms to your Block A teacher.

The Dance Program is having its first performance this Friday during lunch!  Join us in the Theatre at lunch for a free spooky, scary, Halloween themed performance.  The dancers are also putting on a bake sale Thursday during lunch.  They will be outside the Cafeteria on Thursday to provide for more information & some tasty treats.

On Halloween, October 31st there will be Halloween Cookie Decorating in the Cafeteria at lunch.  Everyone is welcome to come decorate a free sugar cookie.  Hope to see everyone there.

The deadline for submissions to the October Creative Writing Contest is TODAY. All submissions must be submitted to the Library by 3:30 pm. The challenge is to write a letter from the perspective of a famous film or literary antagonist/monster/villain. Winning submissions will receive a certificate and a $10 Starbucks gift card.

Have you thought about becoming a Police Officer?
Police Camp is back!  It will take place the first week of Spring Break (March 18th to 25th) and is open to grade 10, 11 and 12.  Police Camp is a unique youth leadership program providing high school students the opportunity to grow their personal and team leadership skills through a policing, public safety, and public service lens. Over eight days, students will be involved in classroom lectures discussing a wide variety of topics, be led through challenging daily physical training and activity, participate in day and night simulations, practice drill instruction, learn social responsibility and life skills, and much more. As students build self-confidence and interpersonal relations with their peers in a team-based environment, they will also build long-term connections with members of our police services. Explore UVic – On Saturday, November 26th the University of Victoria will welcome prospective students and their families to our beautiful campus for the first campus wide open house since 2019. “Explore UVic” will feature campus tours including residence buildings, sample lectures, student experience panels and more. For students considering the Bachelor of Commerceprogram - The Peter B Gustavson School of Business will be holding virtual information sessions every Wednesday evening between now and December 1st. Students can visit the Gustavson School of Business site to register for a session and can email bizrecruit@uvic.ca with any questions related to these sessions.   

The School of Business will also be hosting a few specific events that proved extraordinarily popular the last time they were offered. The dates/times of these events are as follows:

House of Commons Page Program – Recruiting 40 bilingual students graduating from high school to participate. Apps due Nov. 6.  Are you interested in becoming a page and being part of an unforgettable year-long experience? The page program hires a new cohort of 40 students annually. (Grade 12’s may apply) Its recruitment campaign begins every September, and those applying must be looking to enroll in their first year of university or college the following September.

Camosun College School of Business is hosting a LIVE Information Session from 6:00-7:30pm next Thursday Oct. 27th in the Centre for Business and Access CBA 219.  Tim Kemp and Troy Dunning will start with a ppt. session in CBA 219 and then invite all attendees to walk to the atrium of the Business School where all six program areas will have faculty, program administrators, past program graduates and/or current students to answer questions from prospective students or families.  FREE refreshments will be served.

Volunteering Opportunities
 

Quadra Village Community Centre is seeking volunteers to help put on our annual Quivering Village: Carnival and Creep House, October 28th from 6pm-8pm.
Specifically, these are the roles that still need filling:
– Set-up and Take-down
– Zombies for the Zombie Shooting Gallery (must be okay being shot at with nerf guns!)
– Carnival Game Leaders
This is super fun event, and a great opportunity for high school students to get their volunteer hours for graduation!

Volunteer Opportunities are happening now with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Victoria Capital Region! We have a few single-event volunteer opportunities coming up such as:
1.   Special Collections Events – join us on Saturdays from 10am – 2pm as we host mobile community collections events – collecting clothing, collectibles, small furniture, and household items in various locations across southern Vancouver Island. Upcoming mobile community collection events include Saturday October 29th from 10am – 2pm at Save On Foods Fort & Foul Bay.
2.   Community Yard Sale Fundraiser – join us Saturday October 22nd from 8am – 2pm at our 230 Bay Street location where we will be having our annual Yard Sale fundraiser event! Some tasks will include providing customer service, assisting with parking, cash handling, organizing items to tables, set up (7am – 8am) and take down (2pm – 4pm).

We also have longer term volunteer commitments such as:
3.   Online Marketplace & Auction – If you are interested in recycling donated goods to keep them out of the landfill then join our Online Marketplace team at our 230 Bay Street location! Members of this team will gain experience in selecting items of value from our intake of donations, photograph these items, write thorough descriptions, determine pricing, and post these items on primarily Facebook Marketplace. We offer flexible scheduling, with options of volunteering five days a week from 10am – 5pm (any shift, any time), and ask for a minimum commitment of 4 – 6 months. Training will be provided. With your help, Big Brothers Big Sisters is able to raise funds for our mentoring programs!
4.   Call Center – If you are interested in gaining reception experience, join our Call Center team at our 230 Bay Street location! Members of this team will answer oncoming calls from the public and provide the required customer service for their needs, make targeted outbound phone calls regarding our Special Collections Events, Community Yard Sale Events and more! We offer flexible scheduling, with options of volunteering five days a week from 10am – 5pm (any shift, any time), and ask for a minimum commitment of 4 – 6 months. Training will be provided.

These positions are great for individuals who are community driven or seeking those extra volunteer hours for graduation. The Volunteer Coordinator for Baptist Housing is looking for volunteers who would like to volunteer regularly though the year.  Baptist Housing operates Shannon Oaks an independent living seniors home (just opposite Save on Foods), and Marion Village an Assisted Living/Independent Living community opposite Oak Bay Rec Center.   Students would help with activities, or with technology assistance.  They are also looking for performance level musicians.  Would you like to Volunteer with Baptist Housing?
