Remember, May is Mental Health Awareness Month and here is your Mental Health Tip of The Day:
Practice acts of kindness towards yourself and others.  Hold the door open, give someone a smile, offer a helping hand.  Research has found that kindness can increase happiness and self-esteem, while decreasing stress and anxiety. And remember, you are not alone.

Have you ever been curious about the Aviation Industry? On Friday, May 31st SD61 will have an Aviation Springboard.  Explore aviation career pathways such as manufacturing, inspecting, engineering and marketing as well as the world of aviation at De Havilland / Viking Air through informative tours and interactive hands-on learning.  Applications can be picked in the career center and are due back to Ms. Giesbrecht by May 22nd.   **Please note that transportation to and from the event is each student’s responsibility.  Space is limited, so don’t delay getting your application in. https://oakbaycareercentre.weebly.com/springboards—special-one-day-opportunities.html

On June 6th the Canadian Coast Guard, Department of Fisheries and Oceans and Natural Resources Canada will be hosting a one day event, Science and the Sea.  The event will take place at the Institute of Ocean Sciences on Thursday June 6th.  Learn about earthquakes and tectonics, geoscience research and coastal protection from the impacts of climate change.  We are taking 10 students to the event from 11:30 to 2:00pm.  We will leave here at 10:50 and return to the school at 2:40pm.  If you are interested in attending please see Ms. Giesbrecht or Mr. Alexander as soon as possible.

Are you interested in becoming a police officer? Grade 11 and 12 are invited to apply to join the one-day Secondary Victoria Police Department Springboard on May 14th.  There will also be an Indigenous Victoria Police Department Springboard on May 15th.  Students will explore the world of policing through a behind-the-scenes tour, and interactive and scenario-based activities.  You can pick up an application from Ms. Giesbrecht in the Career Centre if you are interested.  Space is limited, so don’t delay applying. Applications for both are due in to Ms. Giesbrecht by May 8th.

SIP and Camosun are hosting the second Health Exploration Event at Interurban Campus’ Centre for Health and Wellness On Wednesday, May 15th .
Grade 10, 11 and 12 students will see the learning spaces, and hear from instructors, about the  Health dual credit offerings available in the Fall 2024 and Winter 2025. For example: PNUR 101: Anatomy & Physiology, MLAB 139 :Pre Analytics & Lab Principles, Health 111: Indigenous Peoples Health, MOA 155: Medical Terminology.  We will provide busing to and from the event, with pickup and drop-off being at the Tolmie School Board Office.  Pick up an application from Ms. Giesbrecht in the Career Centre and return it by May 8th. https://oakbaycareercentre.weebly.com/springboards—special-one-day-opportunities.html

AP English 12 review sessions have begun in preparation for the exam on May 14. These review sessions are optional and will take place every Monday and Wednesday at lunch in 216 from April 3 until the exam date.

Are you learning English and looking for a fun way to practice your English?  Then come and try the ESL Buddies Games Club at lunch today in the Library.  Every Monday, students learning English are welcome to join this fun, free club.  If you want more information, see Ms. Brereton in Room 120.

You can now purchase tickets to Oak Bay High’s Senior Drama “The Merchant Voice”.  Tickets are available through school cash online or at the door.  $5 for students & seniors, $10 for adults.  Doors open at 6:30, curtains at 7:00 on May 28th & 29th.

The South Jubilee Neighbourhood Association (SJNA) is hosting their annual community event, Parkfest, on August 18th 2024. This event is volunteer-run, and has many fun activities including a bouncy castle and art station for kids, a beer garden, with lots of music and food! They are looking for dynamic and engaged volunteers who can support Parkfest with set-up & take-down, lemonade and coffee service, supervising bouncy castles, kids’ arts station, and more!
Interested students that can volunteer on August 18th can choose a shift of 9am-2pm, 1pm-6pm or the entire 9am-6pm. They will provide volunteers with plenty of break times, food, beverages, and volunteer hours. On Saturday, May 11, Science Rendezvous, one of Canada’s largest, free, one-day STEM festivals, will be returning to Victoria. This event is a great opportunity for students and families of all ages to engage in science in a fun and interactive way.  Science Rendezvous is hosted by the University of Victoria, Camosun College and Ocean Networks Canada, and offers students K-12, educators, and science enthusiasts of all ages the opportunity to engage in hands-on STEM learning by participating in 35+ activities side-by-side with real, world-renowned scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and computer and software experts who live right here in Victoria. Walk through a state-of-the-art greenhouse, peer at the stars using the largest telescope on any Canadian university campus, demo the latest tech for renewable energy, investigate a human skeleton to uncover who they once were, experiment with lasers, explore the ocean…there’s science galore at Science Rendezvous!

Note that doors will be opening at 9:30 a.m. at both locations for families who would benefit from a distraction-reduced environment.
