National Association for College Admission Counselling
The fifth annual NACAC fair is taking place in Vancouver on Sunday, April 19th, from 1-4pm at the Vancouver Convention Centre East Building. Over 100 universities from Canada, the US, the UK, Australia and beyond will be at this fair. The event format is a large university fair with multiple break-out sessions offered during the afternoon. A few examples of session topics includes applying for scholarships, NCAA athletics, and tips for writing a university application essay. You must sign up with Mrs. Giesbrecht by March 12th in order to secure a spot on the bus. Students will need to walk on the Swartz Bay 9:00 am ferry and will be taken to the event by a bus on the Tsawwassen side and picked up at the event by bus and taken back to the catch the 6:00 pm ferry to Swartz Bay.
Seed the City – Urban Farming & Gardening Program – earn high school credits through this outdoor summer work experience. Learn how to grow, harvest, and sell local food. The program will take place from July 7th to August 27 on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm at Reynolds Secondary. Youth Ambassadors Program – The program with Canada is a 3-week leadership exchange program in the United States for teenagers ages 15-18 and adult mentors. The program runs from July 16 – August 3. See the website for more information and to apply. www.youthambassadorsprogram.org The application deadline is March 20th.
University of Alberta is hosting a Registration 101 workshop in Victoria on April 2, 2020. Students can learn how to navigate the BearTracks systems for course selections and create their first-year schedule. This is a free event. Students can register at uab.ca/reg101. (They’ll need to scroll down to Victoria under “Off-campus sessions.”)
Kids For A Cause is doing a hygiene product drive! Please bring any NEW and unused donations to the boxes outside the office.
School Musical “Fiddler on the Roof” – Tickets can be purchased at the school, online here, or Ivy’s Bookstore. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors.

Jen Gibson from Island Sexual Health is graciously offering Oak Bay students with the opportunity to be trained as Sexual Health Ambassadors (SHA). This is applicable to anyone with a keen interest in health, the medical field, and/or is a strong advocate for youth health. This could also be the basis for a next year’s Capstone Project (applicable to current grade 11s) not to mention that it looks great on a resume.
Sexual Health Ambassador (SHA) Training is designed, hosted, and facilitated through Island Sexual Health’s Education Department. The goal of SHA training is to enhance the student body’s health literacy, through the understanding that youth approach youth first about concerns. From the McCreary Centre’s Adolescent Health Survey we know that 73% of youth went to a friend first when they needed help (81% for female-identified). SHA training is designed to equip youth with the information and communication skills required to better support their peers with sexuality issues. This project was originally developed in SD 62 with students who were part of the district Youth Health Committee who requested that sexual health information be made more available to peers, partners, teachers and parents. The training addresses gaps in communication regarding healthy sexuality and ensures youth feel like they are agents of change within their own communities. The topics will be decided upon through group consensus and prioritized according to the time we have available. Training involves approx 6-9 hours of training depending on the session focus and each level builds on the previous level learning.
SHA training offers opportunities or youth to gain advanced communication and relationship building skills, empowering youth with relevant, up-to-date resources and connecting them with local agencies that support their needs. The SHA project is not designed to be a replacement for current curriculum learning outcomes or delivery of clinical health or support services. Nor is the training a course in youth counselling. Participants are encouraged to use the skills and resources they have developed to support initiatives within their school communities such as health weeks, poster campaigns, surveys, newspaper articles, parent education, panel discussions, etc.
This training takes place over 3 sessions. March 3rd from 3:15 to 6:00 at Oak Bay HIgh. March 10th from 3:15 to 6:00 also at Oak Bay High and April 7th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Health Clinic.
Students wishing to take this training need to complete a confidential student information form. Forms can be found in the office and should be returned in the sealed envelope to ensure confidentiality. Youth Volunteer | Youth 2020 Can
If you are between 15 and 29 you’re invited to join Youth 20/20 Can! Volunteers meet regularly to share ideas about projects, events, or activities that matter to them they want to lead and manage in community. Once youth have identified projects, the volunteers partner with community members to plan and host events, activities, or projects – everything from learning about food security issues, to creating murals, and hosting activities at festivals and conferences. Volunteers are supported by Youth Engagement Workers who help coordinate events and activities and meet with youth to make sure their needs are being met.
Benefit to Volunteer: Volunteers are invited to participate in 3 free training sessions over the course of the year on topics that are chosen by youth to help them build skills and learn.
Time Commitment: Participate in planning, volunteering, and/or training events for an average of 10 hours per month.

Environmental Volunteer | Greater Victoria Green Team
Join the Greater Victoria Green Team and help restore habitat throughout the Capital Regional District. We post upcoming volunteer activities on our Meet-up page (https://www.meetup.com/Greater-Victoria-Green-Team/). We have about 60 activities per year ranging from 3-5 hours long. The program is very flexible to join – you can sign up for as many activities as you would like! Activities range from removing invasive plants, planting native vegetation, cleaning up the shoreline and helping out on local farms!

Multiple positions | The Mustard Seed
We have volunteer positions available to be filled throughout the entire organization, but currently the biggest need would be saving food at the Food Rescue Distribution Centre in Esquimalt.
Time Commitment: These positions are 9 am – noon shifts available Monday through Saturday.
Description Of Volunteer Position: This position handles cleaning and gleaning of produce and foodstuffs brought in from around Victoria. Through the work of these folks thousands of pounds of good fresh produce stays out of the landfills each week, providing food for thousands of local families and individuals.
Benefits To Volunteer: Besides helping thousands of folks and the environment, this position also develops many transferable interpersonal, management and leadership work skills. Come join the community serving community to help balance out social, economic and the gaps which exist locally.
