Track and Field BC’s June 2019
Congratulations to the members of the Oak Bay Track and Field team that travelled to Kelowna this weekend for the Provincial Championships. Both the Junior and Senior teams had a successful weekend with over 35 athletes from our school qualifying and competing. There were so many personal bests achieved by individuals and relay teams it was amazing. The Senior team finished an amazing meet with a second place overall score. The two teams combined for 24 top eight finishes on both the track and in the field. Special mention to medallists Makayla Dickinson in the Senior Girls triple jump and Laughlin Irish in the Junior Boys Triple jump, Sr Girls 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams of Olivia Fenton ,Taleesha Hall, Makayla Dickinson Maya Morgan, Alisa Lyesina, Ines Cicaterri, Delaney Chan, and Jack Boden in the 1500m, and BC Champion Isaac Clements in the Men’s Pole Vault and DOUBLE BC Champion Alisa Lyesina in both the 800m and 1500 m races. It was Alisa’s 3rd consecutive win in the 800m. race.
The 2nd place overall team finish continues a long tradition of excellence for Oak Bay Track and Field. In the last 19 years they have eleven 1st place finishes and six 2nd place results at the Provincial Championships. Congratulations to all who competed this year.

ALL AMP students who still need to complete their course work or would like more time, please come to a 309 on Wednesday to hear how you can reach your goals.
Any students who have been involved in AMP or may like to be involved in AMP, please come to 309 in focus this Wednesday.
AMP=Accelerated Math Program allows you to complete math classes when you are ready, rather than waiting for the rest of the class.

Encounters With Canada is an opportunity for students to spend a week in Ottawa with other students from across Canada for a fee of $750. There are 15 themed weeks for students to choose from which enable them to explore and experience potential careers and areas of personal interest. Seats are limited so delay.
Camosun College has posted their student summer programs. These programs are for students born between Jan. 2004 and Dec. 2006 and there are only 18 seats per session. These will all take place at the Interurban Campus Monday to Friday from 9am to 3pm. This year there is $150.00 fee to take part.
The five programs:
August 6th to 9th – Entrepreneurship or Sheet Metal
August 12th to 16th – Science or Light Truck & Transport
August 19th to 23rd – Carpentry
Registration for all five programs will open this Friday, May 31st.
To register, students and families will need to go to the main SIP web page, found at www.camosun.ca/dual-credit, and click on our Summer Programs link.
Starting Friday, this link will be available and live. Within the registration site, there will be detailed information on each program.
Operation Trackshoes – Sporting event for people with special needs NEEDS VOLUNTEER counsellors to support athletes. Desperate shortage for day counsellors. Oak Bay Short Film Fest – The Oak Bay Annual Short Film Fest is on Friday, June 7 during Focus this year. We are welcoming short films under 5 minutes. Films should be submitted by Monday, June 3 to Mr. Laird.
Graduation Numeracy Assessment
THIS EXAM IS REQUIRED FOR GRADUATION
All grade 10 AND 11 students are expected to write the Ministry of Education’s Graduation Numeracy Assessment (GNA) this school year. This assessment will take place on June 21st with two sittings (8:30 AM or 12:30 PM). Students will be scheduled to one of those two sittings shortly (schedule to be posted shortly).
Assessment info:
– the GNA typically takes two hours to complete; however, students may use additional time if needed.
– assessment questions are delivered online but require both computer-based and hand-written responses.
– the GNA is NOT tied to a specific math course. Rather, it evaluates a student’s numeracy skills developed over the course of their education
– results will be reported using a proficiency scale out of 4 which means that students will not receive a percentage nor a letter grade, but instead will receive a 1, 2, 3 or 4. There are not any credits associated with this REQUIRED assessment – transcripts will show RM (Requirements Met) and a score out of 4.

June 2019 Exam Schedule
Regular scheduled classes finish on June 14 with a modified (shortened) schedule. On June 17-21 we have scheduled classes, but each block is lengthened to allow for culminating events, projects or final exams. While each block is 2.5 hours in length, it is the teacher’s discretion whether the student may leave after 1.5 hours. We ask that students leaving before the scheduled break times leave the campus to allow for continued “quite time” during that week

Workplace Alternative Trades Training
WATT is a Free Pre-Apprenticeship Electrical Training Program which includes 3 weeks of hands-on-electrical training, paid work experience, Apprenticeship sponsorship, ongoing mentorship and support, breakfast and lunch provided on classroom days and basic toolkit and Steel-Toe-Boots. Students will earn several certificates, including Occupational First Aid Level 1, Fall Protection, Elevated Work Platform, WHMIS 2015, and Construction Safety Training Systems 09. Camosun College Interurban Campus offers an Explorations in Technology (TEAC 105) course Fridays from 3:00pm to 6:00pm September to February for students (gr. 10-12) interested in exploring Mechanical Engineering, Electronics, Civil Engineering and Computer Science. Camp Pringle Counsellor in Training (CIT) program focuses on team leadership and builds the skills needed to work with children in the outdoor recreation or camping industry. Participants are paired with a Camp Pringle staff member to co-lead a group of children at summer camp. CIT is for teens aged 16 to 18 who are interested in outdoor recreation and working with children. All CITs are expected to participate in training from July 2-5, and co-lead for four to six camp sessions from July 7 to August 16, 2019 (participants may choose the weeks that work best for them). CITs work from Sunday evenings until Friday afternoons. Participants receive free meals and accommodations while at camp as well as a weekly honorarium of $150.00. All participants will also receive a reference letter documenting their success in the program and service hours to the camp. James Bay Community School Centre is looking for volunteers to volunteer at their 19th Annual Community Picnic on Wednesday June 12th from 3:30 – 6:30pm. They need help setting up, cleaning up, supervising the bouncy castles and kinder play area as well as facilitate mini games, café support, face painting and more.
