Previous Announcements

February is Black History month, which was started in the US in 1926 to recognize and celebrate the many achievements and contributions of people of African and Caribbean descent.  The idea spread to Canada in the following decades, and over time all provinces and jurisdictions gradually adopted the practice. Of course, appreciation is not limited to one month, and we recognize that Canada had been greatly enriched by generations, whether escaped slaves from America or the most recent arrivals.  If you want to learn more there is a display board on the Second floor open area, and soon there will be a collection of resources in the Library.  These are only a small sampling of amazing historical and contemporary leaders, but we can show our appreciation for artists, scientists, political pioneers, writers, and athletes each and every month.

A huge congratulations to the Oak Bay Ski and Board Team for their standout performance in the last race of the Island Race Series this weekend, beating all other island schools in every single race. Earning top points in all four categories has secured their ticket to the Provincial Championships in Sun Peaks at the end of February. Way to go racers!
Most importantly, skiers and boarders made big improvements over these three races, making several parents and coaches remark at how far you’ve come. Racers should be proud of their hard work!
In the girls snowboard, Oak Bay finished first place overall with several racers in the top 5. Oak Bay’s fastest was Dallas Batty, followed by Captain Kylee Trumble and Stella Pepler. Special shoutout to grade 9 Sophie Longe for a strong finish and a big jump up the rankings!
On the boys side, Oak Bay had two athletes on the top of the podium, with Captain Alex Joiner in 1st and Calum Parker in 3rd. This was Calum’s first podium result – well done!
Skiers on the Easy Rider course ripped through a challenging course. Congrats to Alistair Meyer for taking home the fastest time of the day. Special shoutout (and welcome) to Jakob Bauer on finishing 2nd. Jakob has filled in for Max Schmid, who returned to Germany last week.
On the girls side of Easy Rider, Kate Boyd took home first place with decisive win. Shoutout to grade 9 Ari Rowand for a big climb up the rankings this week, finishing 3rd.
Skiers on Exhibition faced a steeper and longer course on the upper section of the run and carved their way through hard-packed snow. Girls took home first place overall, including several top 10s. Congrats to Valeria Pagliassotto for taking home her first win of the season, and improving her result each race. Georgia Henson took home her first podium of the season, taking home 3rd. Special shoutout to Isla Trenholm for the fastest single run of the day.
On the boys side, Oak Bay had a decisive victory, taking home first, second, and third! Congrats to Yoyo Deng, Gavin Bayley, and Captain Julian Gauld. Special shoutout to Emil Pahnke for being one of the few who made a big improvement from run one to run two.
Way to go racers!”
