Leadership is hosting a grade wide breakfast Thursday, February 13th at 8:30am. There will be cinnamon buns, contests and Harry Potter trivia.
SKI & SNOWBOARD TEAM RACE RESULTS:
Our ski and snowboard team raced incredibly fast on Monday! For the first time, Oak Bay won ISLANDS in ALL FOUR DISCIPLINES – Girls’ Ski & Snowboard, and Boys’ Ski & Snowboard! Oak Bay had the TOP 4 INDIVIDUAL RACE TIMES in boys’ skiing – Congratulations to Griffin Hart for winning Islands, and teammates Grayson Gammon, Sam Meyer and John Horwood for being close behind in 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Outstanding results! Oak Bay also had the TOP 4 INDIVIDUAL RACE TIMES in boys’ snowboard – Congratulations to Jake Trumble for winning Islands, and teammates Evan Graham, Hudson Board & Ben White for sweeping the TOP 4 placements. In girls’ snowboard, Colleen McKee won SILVER. We are so proud of you Colleen!
Throughout the entire Island Race Series, our entire team took top honours! Our boys’ snowboard team WON their team category at all three races; Jake Trumble winning GOLD at each one. We have a great Girls’ Snowboard Team who WON their team category! Colleen McKee won SILVER! The Boys’ Ski Team WON their team category at all three races (scoring the maximum 20 points); Griffin Hart winning GOLD at each one. The Girls’ Ski Team Won their category every race to cap off our impressive showing! 4 of the top 6 racers were from Oak Bay with Silken Shepard skiing the single FASTEST race of the day at last weekend’s race. Awesome job to ALL TEAM MEMBERS!

Sea of Cortez Trip (November 2020)– Information meeting, Monday, February 10th at 6:30pm in room 233.
All grade 9 students interested in trying out for this year’s MathChallengers team please be in room 307 at lunch on Thursday. A “pretest” will likely be needed to decide on the 5 team members, and any alternates. The contest takes place on Friday, Feb. 21st at Camosun College Interurban Campus…all afternoon, so you would miss 2 classes.
Mathletes please remember to let your Math teacher know if you are planning to writing one of the Pascal, Cayley or Fermat Math contests and bring $1 to him or her. We will need firm numbers soon to order the contests!
Congratulation to the Speech & Debate class which hosted the Commonwealth Conference this Saturday and special recognition goes to Olivier Shafonsky who will represent the Island at the Nationals in Ottawa.

SD61 and Viking Air are offering an Aviation Springboard on Friday February 14th. Students will have the opportunity to explore the world of aviation at Viking Air through interactive and hands-on activities. This takes place on a pro d day, so students will not miss any classes, but will be committing to this Springboard on their day off. Applications are in the Career Centre and are due into Mrs. Giesbrecht as soon as possible. Seating is limited so don’t delay.
Are you a young woman interested in trades? There will be a Women in Trades and Technology (WITT) event on Wednesday February 26th in partnership with Camosun College at the Interurban Campus. Lunch and transportation will be provided to and from Camosun College Interurban Campus. Each student will take part in two trades and two technologies throughout the day. Group 1 will explore Electrical, Carpentry, Computer Science, and Civil Engineering. Group 2 will explore Sheet Metal, Automotive, Electronics, and Mechanical Engineering. Seats are limited so don’t delay. Get your application in the Career Centre and hand it in to Mrs. Giesbrecht by February 18th.

McGill Summer Academy 2020!
From July 5-18 and July 19-August 1, students in grades 10 and 11 from across the world will have the opportunity to participate in classes, workshops, and social activities introducing them to university life, McGill, and Montréal – all while being hosted in a McGill Residence! The application deadline is February 6, 2020. Those interested in learning more about the McGill Summer Academy can refer to our website and join our mailing list to receive updates on the 2020 program!
Grade 11 & 12’s – Are you interested in getting a behind the scenes look at how The Royal BC Museum works? SD61 and The Royal BC Museum have coordinated a day on Tuesday March 3rd from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm to give students an opportunity to learn the career paths and meet the people who make the Museum function successfully. Careers of interest are Archivists, Curators, Conservationalists, Carpenters, Exhibit Designers, Graphic Designers and Marketers. There will be interactive hands on activities to enhance the learning. Application can be picked up in the Career Centre and must be handed back in to Mrs. Giesbrecht as soon as possible, no later that February 20th. Seating is very limited so don’t delay.
Mini Med School 2020 – Victoria
Grades 10-12 are invited to attend Mini Med School on April 2 from 8:30-3:30pm at the Royal BC Museum. Students will have the opportunity to engage with world-class researchers and health professionals, learn about the latest medical research, explore the diverse careers available in science and medicine while networking with like-minded students. Admission is FREE. Student registration will be available online on Monday, February 10 at 4 p.m. at www.minimedschoolbc.ca. Registration will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Space is limited, so we encourage students to register as soon as registration opens.
TALE – Tourism And Leadership Exploration Program is being offered again this summer. Students will gain knowledge in wilderness first aid, risk management, trip planning and survival skills. Upon completion of the program students will acquire 8 high school credits and an invaluable connection with a local tourism company through a 4-week work experience placement. The program takes place Mon-Fri for July and August. Please see Mrs. Giesbrecht to learn more and to pick up an application. Applications are due by April 2nd.

You must be between 13 and 18 year of age, have an interest in Japanese culture, be able to reach out and make connections with students whose first language is not English. Volunteering
Youth Volunteer | Youth 2020 Can
If you are between 15 and 29 you’re invited to join Youth 20/20 Can! Volunteers meet regularly to share ideas about projects, events, or activities that matter to them they want to lead and manage in community. Once youth have identified projects, the volunteers partner with community members to plan and host events, activities, or projects – everything from learning about food security issues, to creating murals, and hosting activities at festivals and conferences. Volunteers are supported by Youth Engagement Workers who help coordinate events and activities and meet with youth to make sure their needs are being met.
Benefit to Volunteer: Volunteers are invited to participate in 3 free training sessions over the course of the year on topics that are chosen by youth to help them build skills and learn.
Time Commitment: Participate in planning, volunteering, and/or training events for an average of 10 hours per month.

Environmental Volunteer | Greater Victoria Green Team
Join the Greater Victoria Green Team and help restore habitat throughout the Capital Regional District. We post upcoming volunteer activities on our Meet-up page (https://www.meetup.com/Greater-Victoria-Green-Team/). We have about 60 activities per year ranging from 3-5 hours long. The program is very flexible to join – you can sign up for as many activities as you would like! Activities range from removing invasive plants, planting native vegetation, cleaning up the shoreline and helping out on local farms!

Multiple positions | The Mustard Seed
We have volunteer positions available to be filled throughout the entire organization, but currently the biggest need would be saving food at the Food Rescue Distribution Centre in Esquimalt.
Time Commitment: These positions are 9 am – noon shifts available Monday through Saturday.
Description Of Volunteer Position: This position handles cleaning and gleaning of produce and foodstuffs brought in from around Victoria. Through the work of these folks thousands of pounds of good fresh produce stays out of the landfills each week, providing food for thousands of local families and individuals.
Benefits To Volunteer: Besides helping thousands of folks and the environment, this position also develops many transferable interpersonal, management and leadership work skills. Come join the community serving community to help balance out social, economic and the gaps which exist locally.

Leisure Assistant Volunteer | Recreation Integration Victoria
Recreation Integration Victoria is looking for volunteers to help individuals with disabilities become more active and involved in their communities. Participate in recreational and leisure activities you enjoy while providing companionship for others. No experience required.
