Graduation Literacy 10 and Numeracy 10 Assessment on Friday, April 16th 9:30 AM.
Students will be scheduled to write the Numeracy or Literacy 10 assessments if:
- They have a Math 10 or English 10 in Q3
- They have already taken Math 10 or English 10 this year and have yet to write the assessment.
- They are in grade 11 or 12 and have NOT written the Numeracy 10 assessment
- They are in grade 11 and have NOT written the Literacy 10 assessment
A list of which students are scheduled to write the assessment including the room that they are assigned to that day, has been posted on the front office window and all Grade 10 block G teachers have a copy.
A reminder that April 16th is a Curriculum Completion Day and therefore, students will NOT be attending regular classes. If you have been asked to attend Curriculum Completion by one of your current teachers, you will need to see them in the afternoon on that day.
More about the assessments:
- Students should arrive at 9:15 AM to login and settle in.
- Students will have 3 hours to write this assessment.
- This assessment is completely electronic and a device will be provided to each student.
- Students should bring:
- a water bottle, if desired,
- 2 pencils,
- 1 eraser,
- Numeracy only – A scientific calculator (there is an electronic calculator if a student forgets)
- No other materials are permitted into the assessment room including internet watches (ie apple watch).
- Scrap paper will be made available for students who need it
Students have been scheduled into rooms where there is enough space to have 6 foot distance between students. Students will be required to wear a mask while writing the assessment. Please do complete the daily health check the morning of and IF you are not feeling well, STAY HOME. There will be future opportunities to write this assessment.
These assessments are scored on a proficiency scale out of 4 which means that students will NOT receive a percentage or letter grade, but instead will receive a 1, 2, 3 or 4. There are not any course credits associated with this exam; instead, transcripts will show RM (Requirements Met) and a score out of 4. Please check with the university or college that you are applying to determine the entrance standards regarding this assessment. If you need assistance with this, please see Ms. Giesbrecht in the Careers office or any of our counsellors at Oak Bay High. If a student determines that they would like or require a higher score after they have written the assessment, they will have the opportunity to re-write in future years. Results typically take about 2 months to be finalized and can be found by the student logging into their MyEd account.

Thank you to Ms. Gilbert for providing a short orientation to the assessment. It is of significant value for students to view this orientation AND to work through a sample assessment or two.

2021 District Authority Scholarships ~ The Ministry of Education has allocated to Oak Bay High School 31 awards this year worth $1250 each.
These awards will be given to students who demonstrate excellence in one of the following specialty areas:
- Business
- Foods/Textiles
- Technology
- Physical Activity
- Community Service
- Creative Writing
- Performing Arts (Drama, Music, Dance)
- Visual Arts (Includes Media Arts)
- Indigenous Languages and Culture
- Languages
- Technical and Trades Training

The U.S. Consulate in Vancouver is pleased to invite your students to a virtual seminar in either Mandarin (April 6) or Cantonese (April 20) with EducationUSA about higher education options in the United States. The session will begin with a 15-minute presentation in either Mandarin or Cantonese, followed by a Q&A session with EducationUSA adviser Jenika Heim. Translators will assist with the Q&A session.

FREE SAT Boot Camp
The EducationUSA SAT Boot Camp is a five-session intensive for Canadian students who are preparing to take the SAT exam (ideally in Grades 10 or 11). These sessions are free of charge.
REGISTER HERE for the April SAT Boot Camp, April 12-16, 2021, 1 pm ET
Session 1 (4 hours): Full-length Practice Test – this will be a live, proctored practice test
Session 2 (2 hours): The SAT in admissions – general information about the SAT, registration, and time management tips
Session 3 (2 hours): Reading Comprehension strategies
Session 4 (2 hours): Math and Writing strategies
Session 5 (3.5 hours): Full-length Practice Test – another practice test and a chance to practice your new skills!
It is best to attend all sessions, but it is okay to just come to the ones that you can. All sessions will be recorded, in case you are unable to make it. All registered attendees will receive a recording via email after the event.
