Congratulations to Oak Bay High’s Ski & Snowboard Team on a stellar performance at the Provincial Championships in Smithers. Our athletes had great results on the race course, and an amazing experience in northern BC. We could see the effort and intensity that the team brought to this race, and Coaches Tina and Stephen were very proud of our 25 athletes. There were many highlights, but just to pick a few of them, we’d like to honour:
– Sophie Longe, our grade 12 Girls’ snowboard captain, who’s been with this team since grade 9, brought home an individual medal in the girls’ GS snowboarding. The smile on Sophie’s face as she realized her podium result with a circle of teammates huddled around her was incredible.
-Cooper McGowan, our grade 12 boys’ snowboard captain, who was bombing down the GS in 4th before a wipeout that ended his run. No regrets in going all out!
-Katie Lindsay, our grade 12 ski captain, who put so much power into her ski edge that she almost lost control in her second GS run. Her stellar performance and competitiveness is a testament to Tim Bogle’s years of coaching Katie!
-Emily Sharp, a grade 9 skier, who came down feeling sick for most of the trip, had a first place interval time in the GS race, which is an ultra competitive field of athletes. Emily’s cohort of grade 9s shows the amazing future potential of our team.
-Our dual athletes: Freya Bayley, Mayla & Cali Williams, and Avery Thompson, who raced in both the skiing and snowboarding events. On the final day, this meant switching equipment in a flash and being ready to go. They competed well and helped our team score major points in the combined scores.
-Our forerunners: Leonie Longe, Jackie Lindsay, Charlie Kucherawy, and Helena Spearing, took full advantage of this learning opportunity and skiied fast as forerunners. As soon as they finished their runs, they were our best cheerleaders this team has ever had!
