Sailor for a Day – A Pro D Day Event for Students – October 20th from 8-4 pm at Chief Petty Officers Mess
Spend the day with the Navy in Esquimalt – meet sailors, try activities, and watch demonstrations. Details can also be found of the Career Centre website. https://oakbaycareercentre.weebly.com/news–events
Grades 10-12 Activities 8-4 pm
AM – Introduction to Naval Warfare Officer training -including demonstrations of navigation and Officer of the Watch Maneuvers, including bridge simulator and virtual reality. Practical navigation training in small boats. Bus transfers to locations.
Lunch provided on board HMCS Regina. Bus transfer to ship.
PM – tour of HMCS Regina, a Canadian Patrol Frigate (CPF), a tour of HMCS Cornerbrook, a long-range hunter-killer submarine (SSK), a tour of Fleet Maintenance Facility; meet sailors and learn about their jobs. Walk to pick-up location.
4-4:30 – optional for all – 30-minute recruiting presentation at drop off/pick up location 1575 Lyall Street, Victoria (Chief and Petty Officer’s mess).

Grades 8-9 Activities from 8-4pm (bring change of clothes)
AM – walk to HMCS Regina – activities: ship’s tour, learn what sailors do in their jobs, watch demonstration of a small boat attack, and casualty clearing (first aid), try firefighting, escape drills and knot tying.
Lunch provided on board HMCS Regina (food sensitivities, please bring your own lunch. Please indicate any life threatening allergies when submitting the waivers).
PM – small boat transfer to engage in interactive firefighting and damage control demonstration at the Colwood facility (bring change of clothes), there will be a demonstration of bomb disposal, and there will be static displays of diving equipment, including a diving recompression chamber. Bus transfer back to Esquimalt.

Canadian Students at Sea: Thursday, Nov 9th, 2023
Day sail from Esquimalt to Nanaimo or Pat Bay on a Navy vessel. The two ships will be sailing on are the HMCS Edmonton and HMCS Nanaimo. Both ships are identical to each other.
Learn about Navy careers, speak with sailors, and discover what life is really like in the Navy.
You must be 16 years of age.
We will travel as a group and return by bus from Nanaimo or parents will pick up students at Pat Bay. (Exact final location will be determined next week)
The exact timeline is subject to variable circumstances on the day.If the final destination is Nanaimo then the bus from Nanaimo will stop at a fast food restaurant for dinner so students will need to have money to pay for this meal.

United World Colleges: HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS UNITING THE WORLD FOR OUR PLANET AND OUR FUTURE – EDUCATION FOR PEACE AND SUSTAINABILITY
UWC is a global network of 18 international schools located on four continents (including Pearson College UWC, located in BC, Canada). UWC is a movement that makes education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future. HighTechU at UVic has programs for high school students to get hands-on experience in technology, design and business, by designing and building their own product.
Their fall programs will run on Tuesdays after-school from Oct 17 – Dec 5. They are accepting applications until Oct 7. Their two programs are the Techccelerator, which teaches software development, and the EngAcademy, which teaches Arduinos and C-based programming. Volunteer with Victor School Peer Program – they are looking for grades 10=12 students interested in creating meaningful relationships with neurodivergent peers and the adults that support them. This may involve, playing sports or games, reading, creating art and crafts and early literacy and numeracy tasks with students. Your commitment will be one semester for 2-8 hours monthly. Fall Fairfield, presented by the Fairfield Gonzales Community Association (FGCA), is an annual music, arts, crafts and food festival set in the heart of Fairfield is looking for volunteers. The festival is a free, all-ages, community event celebrating local businesses and non-profits, artists, performers, and people across Victoria in recognition of our dynamic culture and the harvest season. Volunteer roles vary and every student is bound to find something that’s suitable for them!
