Today at lunch, Halloween Dance early bird tickets will be up for sale in front of the Cafeteria!  They are selling for $10 today and tomorrow, so make sure you come down this week.

Senior Girls Basketball tryouts will be Thursday, Oct 19 at 6:30 pm in Small Gym and Friday October 20 at 10 AM.  Grades 10-12 are welcome to attend. It is mandatory to attend at least one, both is preferable.  For questions, contact Coach Dean Fortin.

Tennis Team Try-outs – Anyone interested in playing for the Oak Bay Tennis team this year, there is a mandatory meeting TODAY at the start of lunch in 309. ( 10 minutes)

For anyone who is currently doing AMP 9-12 or is thinking about it, there is a mandatory meeting on Wednesday during focus in 309 to introduce the digital portfolio, financial literacy and Math appreciation projects

Gwaii Engineering is an Indigenous Civil and Environmental Engineering firm who would like to offer day-long shadow opportunities to SD61 students. Virtual opportunity created by the Orthopaedic Surgery Department at BC Children’s Hospital and UBC:
Women In Orthopaedics (WORTH)– Virtual Workshop on Saturday, October 28th, from 9 am to 12 pm PT.
This workshop is open to all young women in high schools (grades 10-12), including women-identifying individuals and non-binary and gender non-conforming students interested in pursuing a career in healthcare and engineering, specifically in orthopaedics. We aim to provide more insight and clarity on careers particularly in the areas of orthopaedics and engineering.

Sailor for a Day – A Pro D Day Event for Students – October 20th from 8-4 pm at Chief Petty Officers Mess
Spend the day with the Navy in Esquimalt  – meet sailors, try activities, and watch demonstrations. Details can also be found of the Career Centre website. https://oakbaycareercentre.weebly.com/news–events
Grades 10-12 Activities 8-4 pm
AM – Introduction to Naval Warfare Officer training -including demonstrations of navigation and Officer of the Watch Maneuvers, including bridge simulator and virtual reality. Practical navigation training in small boats. Bus transfers to locations.
Lunch provided on board HMCS Regina. Bus transfer to ship.
PM – tour of HMCS Regina, a Canadian Patrol Frigate (CPF), a tour of HMCS Cornerbrook, a long-range hunter-killer submarine (SSK), a tour of Fleet Maintenance Facility; meet sailors and learn about their jobs. Walk to pick-up location.
4-4:30 – optional for all – 30-minute recruiting presentation at drop off/pick up location 1575 Lyall Street, Victoria (Chief and Petty Officer’s mess).

Grades 8-9 Activities from 8-4pm (bring change of clothes)
AMwalk to HMCS Regina – activities: ship’s tour, learn what sailors do in their jobs, watch demonstration of a small boat attack, and casualty clearing (first aid), try firefighting, escape drills and knot tying.
Lunch provided on board HMCS Regina (food sensitivities, please bring your own lunch. Please indicate any life threatening allergies when submitting the waivers).
PMsmall boat transfer to engage in interactive firefighting and damage control demonstration at the Colwood facility (bring change of clothes), there will be a demonstration of bomb disposal, and there will be static displays of diving equipment, including a diving recompression chamber. Bus transfer back to Esquimalt.

Volunteer with Victor School Peer Program – they are looking for grades 10=12 students interested in creating meaningful relationships with neurodivergent peers and the adults that support them.  This may involve, playing sports or games, reading, creating art and crafts and early literacy and numeracy tasks with students.
