Oak Bay High’s annual Short Film Fest is fast approaching on June 22 & 23. We are accepting submissions under 5 minutes in length until June 16th. Email or see Mr. Laird in 151 for more details.
Rotary Youth Exchange is an international cultural and educational program often described as a “peace ambassador scholarship,” with an estimated value of approximately $25,000 USD. Each year, we select a few students from Victoria to study abroad for 1 year of high school. Rotary covers most program costs, including room & board, school expenses, and a monthly allowance. Families are responsible for flights, insurance, and personal spending money.
We offer 2 programs:
• Long-Term Exchange (full school year abroad)
• Short-Term Exchange (summer exchange program)

Join Ocean Networks Canada and the Institute of Ocean Science at the Ocean Career Pathways: Candid Panel—featuring four ocean professionals sharing real career stories, practical advice, and the many ways to build a career connected to the ocean. The event is June 4th from 5-6:30 pm at Central Branch Greater Victoria Library, 735 Broughton St. Snacks & SWAG included – plus a chance to win a gift card from Eagle Wing Tours for a whale watching tour for two.
UBC is holding our Black and Indigenous MD Admissions Workshop and Mini Med Schools this summer, in June and July, 2026. The workshops will take place in-person in Prince George, Victoria, Kelowna, and Vancouver, BC and will provide Black and Indigenous students with more information about becoming a doctor, the pathway to applying to medical school, and attendees will take part in fun, hands-on simulations to see what it’s like to be a doctor! Workshop presentations will be given by Indigenous physicians, medical students, and university staff and faculty members.
The Mini Med Schools (1-day workshops) will be taking place in:
- Victoria at the University of Victoria on Thursday, June 25, 2026 – breakfast and lunch provided
- Vancouver at the UBC Vancouver Campus on Friday, June 26, 2026 – breakfast and lunch provided
- Kelowna on Tuesday, June 30, 2026 – breakfast and lunch provided

Canadian Coast Guard days are coming up on May 28th and May 29th. Oak Bay’s scheduled time is from 10:15 to 11:45 on May 29th, and interested students will be taken to 25 Huron St. on a first-come, first-served basis. Students will have the opportunity to take part in interactive demonstrations, hands-on activities, and vessel tours. Please see Ms. Giesbrecht or Mr. Alexander in the career centre if you are interested in attending by May 22nd.
The Outreach Initiatives Coordinator at the UBC MD Admissions Office is reaching out to high school and post-secondary students who are interested in medicine, health sciences, or exploring post-secondary pathways. The Youth Outreach Mentorship Program connects high school students, particularly those from equity-deserving or underrepresented backgrounds, with a UBC medical student for one-on-one mentorship. Students and mentors typically meet for approximately six virtual sessions, with flexibility based on their goals. Matches are made based on interests, educational aspirations, and personal background, and parental/guardian consent is required. Grade 11 & 12 students are welcome to apply for a one-day Police Camp Springboard on June 10th from 9 am to 2:30 pm at the Victoria Police Department. Students will explore the world of policing through a behind-the-scenes tour and interactive and scenario-based activities. Applications can be picked up in the career centre and are due back to Ms. Giesbrecht by 2:00 pm on Wednesday, June 3rd.

World of Choices Skilled Trades Summit for grades 10 – 12 – A one-day exploration into trades and technology, through four hands-on activities. This event is at Camosun College Interurban – New Trades & Technology Building – Thursday, May 28th, 9:45 am – 1:45 pm (lunch is provided). Transportation from the SD61 Board Office will be provided to and from Camosun. Throughout the day, you will explore three trades and one technology.
Team 1 will explore Electrical, Carpentry, Pipe trades, and Culinary.
Team 2 will explore Sheet Metal, Automotive, Fine Furniture, and Electronics.
To apply for the day, pick up an application from Ms. Giesbrecht and have it back to her by May 22nd.

Volunteers needed for the 2026 Victoria MS Walk, happening on Sunday, May 31st, at Cadboro-Gyro Park. MS Walk is a one-day, community-driven fundraising event for people living with multiple sclerosis (MS). Volunteers are vital to the success of our fundraising efforts, and volunteering at MS Walk is a great opportunity for students to build a strong network, gain valuable experience and skills, and give back to the community. Volunteer shifts range from 2-5 hours, and students are welcome to sign up for multiple roles. Do you have a block F spare? A local resident is looking for help moving some boxes. She has about 50 and they weigh approximately 20 pounds. They need to be moved down seven steps of her wooden back stairs, on to a dolly and wheeled to the driveway, and from there loaded into a pickup truck. Summer Garden Employment Opportunity
We are seeking Summer Garden Project Assistants to work for eight weeks from July 2 to August 31. Work will take place in school gardens in Sooke, Colwood, Langford, and Saanich. This is a staff position to work 30-35 hours per week at $22/hour.
