All entries for the May Creative Writing Contest are due into the Library by 3:30pm TODAY. The challenge is to capture in a 250-word descriptive paragraph what community means to you and winning entries will receive a certificate and a Starbucks gift card.

The talent Show is on May 30th.  Find posters throughout the school and scan the QR code to fill out the application form.

Camosun College Academic Advising Department is offering a workshop on June 1st that is designed for students who are new to post-secondary. This workshop is open to current high school students who have accepted their seat in a Camosun College program and will be starting in Fall 2023. Students are invited to the second annual Canadian Coast Guard Days school event on June 1, 2023! Our school will leave Oak Bay at 10:00am to be back at school by 12:00-12:30pm.  This exciting and interactive event for students and teachers is being held at the Coast Guard Base at 25 Huron Street in James Bay. Springboard – Policing with the Victoria Police Department!
On Wednesday, May 31st we are partnering with the Victoria Police to enable 18 of our students to explore and experience Policing through hands-on, scenario-based activities, demonstrations, and discussions with Victoria Police Department members.

  • Grade 11 & 12 students are welcome to apply to participate.
  • Student applications are due in to Ms. Giesbrecht on or before Wednesday, May 24th . Spots are limited so don’t delay!

Shift Energy Solar Power is hosting a one day Springboard May 26th  – Reminder to all students that the Sustainable Energy Springboard applications are due into Ms. Giesbrecht by Thursday May 18th. For students grades 9-12. This is an opportunity to explore the world of sustainable energy and associated career pathways through presentations, tours, and hands-on activities at Shift Energy Group’s headquarters and a solar energy site at Gorge Pavilion. Seating is limited!  Applications can be picked up in the Career Centre and returned to Ms. Giesbrecht by May 18th .  

Tourism and Hospitality Springboard – June 2nd from 8:45am to 4:00pm at the Laurel Point Inn.  This is an opportunity for students from grade 10-12 to explore the tourism and hospitality industry through hands-on activities and experiences, as well as by hearing from local experts in the tourism industry who will share their advice and guidance on how to peruse a job or career within tourism and hospitality in Victoria.  Pick up and application in the Career Centre and return it to Ms. Giesbrecht by May 26th.

Previous Announcements

Just a reminder to all students who drive to school.  Please be mindful that the parking lots located at the front of the school and the rear of the school, by the gymnasium, are for staff only.  Student parking is adjacent the track, at the end of Goldsmith Ave.  Please also remember to obey speed limits while in the proximity of the school as we have been receiving complaints from our neighbors.  Thank-you!

Volunteering Opportunities

Fun Volunteering Opportunity – The Northridge Elementary Parent Advisory Council (PAC) is currently planning a Fun Fair. They are looking for 10-20 responsible, energetic students to help us out with face painting as well as assisting with games and activities. Students can expect to be there for  2-3 hours on Friday night (4:00-9:00 pm), June 9th.  If you are interested please see Ms. Giesbrecht in the Career Centre.

The Greater Victoria Green Team would like to invite you, your students, and your community to TWO upcoming volunteer opportunities in Oak Bay!
On Saturday May 27th from 9:45 am – 1:00 pm, we will be helping to restore the garry oak savanna habitat in Anderson Hill Park by removing invasive species such as scotch broom and gorse. Event RSVP and further details can be found on our Meetup group website at bit.ly/GVGTmay27.

NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY. All ages and abilities are welcome. Instruction, gloves, tools and snacks are provided.

Margaret Jenkins Spring Fair is having their annual spring fair on Friday June 16th from 5-8pm and looking for volunteers for approximately 1.5 – 3 hours.   Volunteer positions would be: Bouncy Castle supervision, Games & Race organizing & liaison, Face Painting, Art installation help etc. Volunteers will receive free food vouchers at the event.  See Ms. Giesbrecht in the Career Centre for the contact information if you are interested.

The Recreation Program Coordinator for the James Bay Community School Centre is looking for volunteers. They are holding their annual James Bay Community Picnic on June 7th from 3:30-6:30pm and she is looking both for volunteers to help run our kids’ games and activities and for musical performers. Last year they had between 500-600 community members attend the event which was a fun afternoon of food, music, and activities. Please see Ms. Giesbrecht if you are interested.
