BC Student Film Festival

Gwaii Engineering Https://www.gwaiieng.com/ is an Indigenous Civil and Environmental Engineering firm who is offering three day-long shadow opportunities to three SD61 students.
Details:
– Gwaii would like to offer this opportunity to equity deserving groups in the engineering career pathway, such as women and Indigenous students.
– There is no grade level set, but the student will need to be mature and focused enough to participate within an engineering firm environment for the day.
– There is an application required and students can pick up a copy from Ms. Giesbrecht in the Career Centre.
NOTE to share with students: if more than one application comes in for the day shadows, student’s resume and prompt responses will be used to choose which candidate will get to take part, so these are important pieces!
– There are three job shadow opportunities that students can choose from (students can choose more than one month, but will only get to participate in one job shadow):
– 1 x April
– 1 x May
– 1 x June
– Students can apply now for any of the months they are able to participate in the job shadow.
– Once a student is chosen, they will work with Gwaii to find an appropriate day for the job shadow to happen.
The deadline to apply is March 14, 2023.  

SPRING BREAK AVIATION CROSS COUNTRY TOUR – MARCH 20th
The Elevate Aviation Cross Country Tour empowers youth to consider a career in aviation through inspirational presentations and behind the scenes tours by women in aviation. Each tour day is free of charge and features incredible guest speakers, lunch, and behind-the-scenes tours of the airport. Students between the ages of 12-18 will hear from pilots, air traffic controllers, aerospace engineers, aircraft mechanics, and other aviation professionals.  They will be hosting their 7th Annual Cross Country Tour on Monday, March 20, 2023 at the Victoria International Airport.  Students can register online at https://elevateaviation.ca/programs/tours/

Previous Announcements

Just a reminder to all students who drive to school.  Please be mindful that the parking lots located at the front of the school and the rear of the school, by the gymnasium, are for staff only.  Student parking is adjacent the track, at the end of Goldsmith Ave.  Please also remember to obey speed limits while in the proximity of the school as we have been receiving complaints from our neighbors.  Thank-you!

Have you already completed Calc 12?  tspray is looking for math12 Calc 12 TAs.  Come and make a difference and take your understanding to the next level.
Have you finished a math course at Oak Bay. The math department needs your help.  We are looking for students who want to make a difference in our school to support learning in our classrooms.  Please see your past math teacher for details OR come and see tspray in 309 and we will set it up.  You can TA for credit, volunteer hours, a reference letter or because it is just plain rewarding.    The TA program is very flexible and can work around your skills and interests.  

Volunteering Opportunities

Island Health’s Step Up Youth Volunteer program is back and recruiting for Fall 2023!

  • This unique program is designed for youth 15-18 years of age who are interested in pursuing a career in healthcare.
  • The program runs from September – April (applicants must turn 15 prior to the start of the program).
  • Commitment is typically one 2-hour shift per week, after school or on weekends (site dependent).
  • The volunteer role is centered on providing social engagement support to patients and residents. Additional duties vary by location.
  • NEW** Volunteers hear from a variety of guest speakers, learn about different careers in healthcare, and may work on small projects together.
  • Application opens April 1st and closes July 15th 2023
  • 4 locations will be available in Victoria for the 2023-24: Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria General Hospital, The Summit Long Term Care, and Saanich Peninsula Hospital.

NEW** The Step Up Youth Program is partnered with the Altruition scholarship program. This scholarship helps students in financial need accumulate scholarship credit starting in grade 10 at the rate of $20 per volunteer-hour. Students in grades 10, 11, and 12 may apply for this Scholarship. (Think of it as a University savings program! Untouchable until graduation).

The application is competitive and involves a 10-15 minute interview. Interview questions are provided ahead of time so students can prepare. We anticipate to have approximately 50-70 new seats open across all Victoria locations for the 2023-2024 year. Step Up Youth will have a booth at SD61’s April 27th Career Fair.   1. Career Oriented – Ideally in a perfect world we find someone who is interested in looking at Roofing as a career. Starting on ground clean up and mentor/train into roofing apprentice and then journeyman roofer.
  2. Summer employment – committing to ground clean up and some additional skill training for someone who is a quick study for the summers

Starting Wage $22/hr could expect more with valid experience OR skill progression the candidate builds their skill level.

Journeyman Roofer could expect to be paid $38-42/hr in today’s market with group benefits as a yard stick for anyone interested in a career as a sloped or flat roofer.
