Congratulations to the Senior Girls Rugby 7s team for winning the provincial championships, beating top ranked Claremont, 10-7, in an exciting final!

Congratulations to the Junior Barbs Rugby team for winning the bronze medal at the provincial championships, beating Elgin Park in the final match of their season.

Congratulations to the Barbs Rugby team for placing 4th ​at the provincial championships, suffering a narrow loss to RE Mountain in the finale of their season.

Next week is Wellness Week, hosted by Connect to Care, with events happening all week! To kick off there will be yoga at lunch in the dance studio TODAY, open to all students!
There will also be a special presentation on Allyship Tuesday during G block, please sign up by filling out the Google form available on posters around the school or by talking to Mr. Hamilton.

Grads, get your tickets to the grad social event.  Tickets are sold Monday to Thursday at lunch across from the Theatre.  $10.00 cash only.

We will have a meeting for all grade 10 & 11 students who wish to take on a leadership role for next years Cops For Cancer campaign on Tuesday, June 7th at the start of lunch in the gym.

COAST GUARD DAYS – JUNE 10TH
There is still space available for any students wanting to learn more about the Canadian Coast Guard.  To sign up please see Ms. Giesbrecht in the Career Centre for the paperwork.  Students will have the opportunity to attend “Coast Guard Days” at the Victoria Base for a few hours the morning of June 10th.  There will be several booths and demonstrations highlighting who the Canadian Coast Guard are, and the type of work they do – from helicopter operations, vessel tour, search and rescue, aids to navigation and more.  The school permission slips need to be signed and back in to Ms. Giesbrecht by 3:00pm June 8th.

Attention Grade 11’s – Are you planning on a career in Health & Human Services?
Camosun is offering two Dual Credit classes focusing on health next September-December at the Interurban Campus.
ELC130 – Early Childhood Profession
Health 111 – Indigenous Peoples Health
These courses take place on Friday’s from 3:30pm to 6:20pm.

HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES CAN BEGIN THEIR CAREER AT SEA!
Indigenous people and women who are Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents are invited to participate in the fully-funded Bridge Watch Rating program. You will learn and enhance seamanship skills, earn nationally-recognized certifications, and embark upon an exciting, entry-level career in the Marine industry. Hear from experienced sailors, take field trips, practice hands-on techniques, and undertake a practicum at sea. Science Rendezvous – Free Family Festival!
This year, the University of Victoria and Camosun College partner to bring Science Rendezvous to Victoria for the first time. Science Rendezvous is a national STEM outreach initiative with one of the largest one-day festivals promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Math in Canada.
Head to UVic or Camosun Interurban (or both!) on May 7 from 10 am to 3 pm to learn side-by-side from real, world-renowned scientists, engineers, mathematicians and computer and software experts who live right here in Victoria. This free event is open to all ages.
Activities include:
Explore why Vancouver Island Rocks! Look at local geology, rocks as part of Earth’s rock cycle, and play fossil detective to identify real fossils.
Vibrabugs: Do a bit of soldering and then race your electronic bug through a maze.
Discover the science behind medical X-rays
Look at stars using the largest telescope on any Canadian university campus

Future Global Leaders – UBC
Your students aged 15 to 18 can get a head start on their academic goals with the UBC Future Global Leaders program. This pre-university program is a great way for your students to work out what their passions are while they’re still in high school, and prepare for success at university and beyond by studying a popular course without the stress of exams. Students can attend either online courses that last three weeks or join us on campus in Vancouver, for two-week courses (that combine morning classes, afternoon workshops, and fun social activities). Future Global Leaders runs on various dates in July and August.

Volunteering Opportunities

Are you interested in applying to volunteer at the hospital?  Good news!  The popular Step Up Youth Program for the 2022-23 school year is slated to begin again this coming fall.  Applications are now open! The Step Up Youth volunteer program is designed to support youth who are interested in learning about a career in healthcare.
Priority will be given to youth who participated in our virtual program, and we are recruiting for a limited number of volunteer positions for the following Island Health Facilities:
Saanich Peninsula Hospital, Saanichton
Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria
The Summit (Long-Term Care), Victoria
Applicant Info:
The program is for youth 15-18 years of age (no exceptions currently for those younger than 15. Applicants must turn 15 prior to the start of the program);
Commitment is generally one (2hour shift) once a week after school for the duration of the school year (September to April);
Volunteer duties vary based on location and each facility’s needs.

Oak Bay Parks, Recreation and Culture is looking for youth volunteers to join the Community Arts Volunteer Team. We are looking for some help during some of the free concerts and arts events scheduled in the neighborhood this summer. Oak Bay Co-op Preschool (on Elgin Rd) is organizing summer camps for the first four weeks of the summer.  They will run Monday – Friday, June 20 – July 15th from 9:15 – 1:15.  We are looking for student volunteers to support our ECE.  This would be a great opportunity for any students interest in becoming a teacher.  Great for an elementary education resume.
Volunteers would…

  • prepare materials prior to children arrival
  • clean up of materials and space as needed throughout the camp day and after
  • help children engage in play
  • assist the ECE with group circle time and as needed
  • support children with transitions and routines such as arriving at school, washing hands, throughout play time, etc.
  • and much more!

Do you ride BC Transit? Seniors Serving Seniors is looking for volunteers to assist seniors in becoming familiar with public transportation. Student would only need to attend one of the workshops that BC Transit will be facilitating and help the senior once or twice use the bus system.  If you are interested, please email ed@sssbc.org or call 250-413-3211.
