All Provincial track and field athletes meet at the track at the beginning of lunch for a team photo. This is mandatory! 

In celebration of National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21st, there will be a drumming workshop that is open to all in the Theatre on Wednesday during Focus.

Don’t miss the Grade 9 Musical Theatre presentation of Beauty and the Beast Junior, Tuesday & Wednesday this week at 7:00 PM.  Tickets are $5 at the door.

Please make sure your locker has been cleaned out.  We will be changing the locks on all the lockers and anything left behind will be donated.

Congratulations to the following students who took the 3 top spots in an art contest held at the Victoria conference center last week. The contest was run in conjunction with the Coastal Zone Conference and featured emerging artists from the Victoria area. The conference theme was “What the Coast means to you”.

Students entering grade 11 or 12 next year are invited to apply to Techccelerator and/or EngAcademy offered through High Tech U at UVic.  Techccelerator is a 5-day intensive software engineering program presented in collaboration with our industry sponsors, Workday.  It runs August 14 – 18, 10AM-4PM, in person at UVic.  EngAcademy is a 5-day intensive robotics program presented in collaboration with engineers from the ocean industry. It runs August 28 – September 1, 10AM-4PM, in person at UVic.  The fee if you are accepted to either is $250.00.  Scholarships are available in cases of financial need. Congratulations to our Operation Track Shoes team for winning the School Team Sportsmanship Award.

Congratulations to the Oak Bay Track & Field Team for competing at Provincials and winning the Girls & Combined banner!  Shout out to Elly McDowell-Mitchell for winning back to back 400 championships and setting a new school record, and Charlie Mlotshwa for setting a junior 3000m record!

Volunteering Opportunities

Abkhazi Garden is looking for weekend volunteers.  Students will be trained to welcome visitors from all over the world, take donations and sell plants.   There is a shift on Saturday from 1:30pm to 4pm and possibly this same shift on Sunday as well.  Please contact Cherie Miltimore at volunteer@conservancy.bc.ca or call her at 250-896-0864 if you are interested.

Do you have a bit of extra time over the summer? Would you like an interesting, fulfilling volunteer experience serving lunch and socializing with people in a community setting? Then James Bay Community Lunch is the place for you. You can serve, welcome guests, operate the dishwasher, clean up, your choice, and arrange your own schedule. We are located in the hall of James Bay United Church and serve a healthy meal every Thursday 1:00-2:30. Our guests include a variety of people and ages and our volunteers are from the community. Make memories with Japanese students by becoming a conversation buddy.  Volunteers take part in English lessons, activities, and excursions with Japanese students studying in Canada.  To learn more and get involved apply for the Buddy Program www.gpi-na.ca

Government House would be delighted to work with student volunteers this summer in the Government House.gardens.  We work on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, usually starting at 8:30am until noon.  We are looking for help in a number of areas including our Nursery and our Vegetable gardens as well as in a number of more formal gardens where the tasks may include some heavier work such as moving plants and creating new beds.  There are also opportunities to work with our Garry oak eco-system restoration team. Volunteers needed with iCan Bike Program.   The School Age Program of Queen Alexandra Centre for Childrens Health is partnering with iCan Shine to host an iCan Bike camp to teach children with cognitive and/or physical challenges how to ride a two wheeled bike. Check it out at www.icanshine.org Gain valuable experience working alongside youth with special needs in a fun active environment.  What they are looking for: 

  • Enthusiastic physically fit individuals, at least 15years old who are eager to assist a child or youth with special needs to learn to ride a two wheeled bike
  • Volunteers must be physically fit enough to walk, jog, and run beside riders on the bike for most of the 75 minute sessions
  • Able to attend 1 hour orientation session on Sunday prior to the camp is preferable but not mandatory
