The International Student yearbook photo will be taken on the Social Staircase at the start of Focus TODAY. We would like ALL International Students there for the photo please!

Girls Rugby will be starting practice the first week of February on Monday and Tuesday after school on the Oval.

Congratulations to the ski and snowboard team on an awesome race day at Mt. Washington.   For the second race in a row, our entire team took top honours!  Our boys’ snowboard team WON their team category;  Jake Trumble winning GOLD and Evan Graham winning SILVER!  Excellent job boys!  We have a great Girls’ Snowboard Team who WON their team category!  Colleen McKee won SILVER!  The Boys’ Ski Team WON (scoring the maximum 20 points).  They took top 4 places in their event this week – Griffin Hart in 1st and Sam Meyer in 2nd.  5 of the top 6 boy skiers were from Oak Bay.  Awesome job!  The Girls’ Ski Team Won their category this week to cap off our impressive showing!  4 of the top 6 racers were from Oak Bay with Silken Shepard skiing the single FASTEST race of the day.     Awesome job to ALL TEAM MEMBERS!

McGill Summer Academy 2020!
From July 5-18 and July 19-August 1, students in grades 10 and 11 from across the world will have the opportunity to participate in classes, workshops, and social activities introducing them to university life, McGill, and Montréal – all while being hosted in a McGill Residence!  The application deadline is February 6, 2020.  Those interested in learning more about the McGill Summer Academy can refer to our website and join our mailing list to receive updates on the 2020 program!

Grade 11 & 12’s – Are you interested in getting a behind the scenes look at how The Royal BC Museum works?  SD61 and The Royal BC Museum have coordinated a day on Tuesday March 3rd from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm to give students an opportunity to learn the career paths and meet the people who make the Museum function successfully.  Careers of interest are Archivists, Curators, Conservationalists, Carpenters, Exhibit Designers, Graphic Designers and Marketers. There will be interactive hands on activities to enhance the learning.  Application can be picked up in the Career Centre and must be handed back in to Mrs. Giesbrecht as soon as possible, no later that February 20th.  Seating is very limited so don’t delay.

TALE – Tourism And Leadership Exploitation Program is being offered again this summer.  Students will gain knowledge in wilderness first aid, risk management, trip planning and survival skills.  Upon completion of the program students will acquire 8 high school credits and an invaluable connection with a local tourism company through a 4-week work experience placement.  The program takes place Mon-Fri for July and August.  Please see Mrs. Giesbrecht to learn more and to pick up an application.  Applications are due by April 2nd.

Mini Med School 2020 – Victoria
Grades 10-12 are invited to attend Mini Med School on April 2 from 8:30-3:30pm at the Royal BC Museum.  Students will have the opportunity to engage with world-class researchers and health professionals, learn about the latest medical research, explore the diverse careers available in science and medicine while networking with like-minded students.   Admission is FREE.  Student registration will be available online on Monday, February 10 at 4 p.m. at www.minimedschoolbc.ca.  Registration will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Space is limited, so we encourage students to register as soon as registration opens.

If you are interested in writing one of the Pascal, Cayley or Fermat contests on Feb. 25th, do the following AS SOON AS POSSIBLE:
**Tell your Math teacher of your interest
**Bring in a loonie ($1) to help cover the cost of the contest
**Pick up an old contest (or two) to practice on and get practicing!!

 SD61 and Viking Air are offering an Aviation Springboard on Friday February 14th.  Students will have the opportunity to explore the world of aviation at Viking Air through interactive and hands-on activities.  This takes place on a pro d day, so students will not miss any classes, but will be committing to this Springboard on their day off.  Applications are in the Career Centre and are due into Mrs. Giesbrecht as soon as possible.  Seating is limited so don’t delay.

Are you a young woman interested in trades?  There will be a Women in Trades and Technology (WITT) event on Wednesday February 26th in partnership with Camosun College at the Interurban Campus.  Lunch and transportation will be provided to and from Camosun College Interurban Campus. Each student will take part in two trades and two technologies throughout the day.  Group 1 will explore Electrical, Carpentry, Computer Science, and Civil Engineering.  Group 2 will explore Sheet Metal, Automotive, Electronics, and Mechanical Engineering.   Seats are limited so don’t delay.  Get your application in the Career Centre and hand it in to Mrs. Giesbrecht by February 18th.

 Job Opportunities

Butchart Gardens is hiring and there is a Job Fair on Wednesday February 12th.  There will be an exclusive gate opening from 6-8pm.  Complimentary admission/no garden access.

 Are you looking for work over the spring break?  St. Michaels is looking for Cultural Ambassadors to work with Japanese students during spring break.  You must be between 13 and 18 year of age, have an interest in Japanese culture, be able to reach out and make connections with students whose first language is not English. Volunteering

BY YOUTH FOR YOUTH – The Canadian Francophone Games will be held in Victoria this summer, July 14 -18, and they are looking for volunteers.  Go to their website: www.jeuxfc.ca and sign up to become a volunteer.  They are also looking to create a Youth Ambassador Program of 40 – 60 French immersion  and francophone schools in the province of BC.  These ambassadors will be involved in the planning and hosting of events.
