Congratulations to Aria Mak for being the winner of this week’s Mighty Oaks award!
Aria took the initiative to organize the Badminton Club, meeting with Admin and teachers to ensure that the club could be successfully run. She organizes the weekly turnout of up to 40 kids, and helps with set-up and ensuring that all students have completed their health checks and making sure that everyone is having a good time!

Mighty Oaks is a way to acknowledge especially extraordinary staff and students. Each week student council will select a name from those submitted and show why they make Oak Bay a better place. If a member of the school community stands out to you, you can nominate them by filling out the from at the link: bit.ly/obmightyoaks

If you have any lightly worn or new athletic wear such as joggers, athletic shirts, shoes, or anything you would wear to the gym that you would be willing to donate to the Washington Foundation. Please drop them off in the bin outside the office.

Attention grades 9-12…The UBC Faculty of Medicine will be hosting a zoom meeting on January 28th at 11:35 for any students who are interested in becoming a doctor. If you’d like to write the 1 hour Grade 9,10 or 11 Waterloo Math Contest on Feb.24th during Support Block, please sign up AND pay either Mr. Carter (Rm 309) or Mrs. Smith (Rm 308) $2 by Jan.29th.  We need to order the contests on Feb.1st.  Thank you!

GREENBRICKS CAREER EXPLORATION CONFERENCE  Explore your options! Students are invited to experience new career opportunities at this FREE career conference held remotely on Saturday, February 20th, 2021 from 9:00am – 2:30pm. The “green economy” is changing the face of the workplace in B.C. and around the world. This career conference is open to 150 students in grades 10-12.  This day allows you to interact with career mentors who have excelled in and are passionate about their green careers.  The day includes prizes and a chance to win a $500 scholarship!  Register here before the fills up!  https://oakbaycareercentre.weebly.com/news–events

The Career Centre coordinates and promotes events focusing on exploration for student’s possible career paths.  Please take a minute to fill out the form on the Career Centre Home page https://oakbaycareercentre.weebly.com/ to let us know pathways you want to explore and we will keep you up to date on relevant events through email.

Would you like to write the University of Waterloo Math Contest?  Open to Grades 9-12. The 1 hour math contests this year will be on February 24th (Gr.9,10,11) and April 7th (Gr.12) during Wed Support block.  The cost for you is $2 (you’ll get a contest and chocolate bar on contest day!)  Go to the Waterloo Math Contest website for practice exams and solutions:   https://www.cemc.uwaterloo.ca/contests/past_contests.html.   Fill out the Google Form at this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1_sMrSPSPk8RBzAJX-hkRM_cYRXRUrjZMiqiXR9t-Wa8/editPlease pay either Mrs. Smith in Rm 308 or Mr. Carter in Rm 307 by Jan.29th.  If you don’t pay by the end of this month, a contest will not be ordered for you.  The contest will be written in Rm 306,307 and 308 on Feb.24th at 12:30pm sharp.  Good luck!

Volunteer with Saanich Parks
Municipal Appointments to Advisory Committees
The District of Saanich currently has a vacant position on the Parks, Trails and Recreation Advisory Committee for one youth member aged 16 – 24 years.
The purpose of the Parks, Trails and Recreation Advisory Committee is to advise Council and recommend policies on parks, trails and recreation matters, including services, facilities and specific community interests. The commitment is a 1-year term. The advisory committee meets on the 4th Wednesday of every month at 4:00 p.m., with the exception of July, August and December when there are no meetings.
