There will be a meeting for all Barbs Rugby players on Thursday, January 21st at lunch in the Big Gym.

 Cultural Connection Club will be hosting a movie event on Thursday, January 21st, after school in the black box, or theatre. We will be providing individually wrapped treats during an intermission. Numeracy 10 Assessment – Information Session |Mrs. Smith will be hosting an information session about the Numeracy 10 Assessment in the library on Thursday, January 21st  from 11:30am to 12:15pm, for any grade 10 who is scheduled to write the Provincial Numeracy Assessment.  First come, first served.  No need to sign-up. The Canadian University Event online was so successful in the fall they have decided to host a Winter Edition.  The CUE BC Winter Edition will be less focused on presentations and more focused on drop-in chats and Q&As so that students can get quick answers to their questions. Any high school student from anywhere in BC is invited to join us and connect with nearly 50 Canadian Universities all in one place!

CONNECT WITH THE CAREER CENTRE – Grades 9-12
The Career Centre coordinates and promotes events focusing on exploration for student’s possible career paths.  Please take a minute to fill out the form on the Career Centre Home page https://oakbaycareercentre.weebly.com/ to let us know pathways you want to explore and we will keep you up to date on relevant events through email.

If you have any lightly worn or new athletic wear such as joggers, athletic shirts, shoes, or anything you would wear to the gym that you would be willing to donate to the Washington Foundation. Please drop them off in the bin outside the office.

If you’d like to write the 1 hour Grade 9,10 or 11 Waterloo Math Contest on Feb.24th during Support Block, please sign up AND pay either Mr. Carter (Rm 309) or Mrs. Smith (Rm 308) $2 by Jan.29th.  We need to order the contests on Feb.1st.  Thank you!

Would you like to write the University of Waterloo Math Contest?  Open to Grades 9-12. The 1 hour math contests this year will be on February 24th (Gr.9,10,11) and April 7th (Gr.12) during Wed Support block.  The cost for you is $2 (you’ll get a contest and chocolate bar on contest day!)  Go to the Waterloo Math Contest website for practice exams and solutions:   https://www.cemc.uwaterloo.ca/contests/past_contests.html.   Fill out the Google Form at this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1_sMrSPSPk8RBzAJX-hkRM_cYRXRUrjZMiqiXR9t-Wa8/editPlease pay either Mrs. Smith in Rm 308 or Mr. Carter in Rm 307 by Jan.29th.  If you don’t pay by the end of this month, a contest will not be ordered for you.  The contest will be written in Rm 306,307 and 308 on Feb.24th at 12:30pm sharp.  Good luck!

UVIC UPDATE:
– Application deadline: The application deadline for all programs is January 31st.  Late applications may be considered for some programs.  More details in the next counsellor update.
– Self-reporting open from February 15 – March 15: “Self Reporting 101” information sessions will be held throughout February to assist students navigate the self-reporting process. I strongly advise all applicants to participate in one of these virtual sessions. Registration will be available on the Tours and Events section of our site.
– Virtual Appointments for students and their families: While we’re always happy to answer emails and take calls to answer questions, prospective students have the option to book a 30-minute virtual appointment with their student recruiter at any time. Students can explore appointment availability and book their time slot here.

The Board Game Café is back!  Come Friday’s at lunch to the Cafeteria for board games, music and fun!

Volunteer with Saanich Parks
Municipal Appointments to Advisory Committees
The District of Saanich currently has a vacant position on the Parks, Trails and Recreation Advisory Committee for one youth member aged 16 – 24 years.
The purpose of the Parks, Trails and Recreation Advisory Committee is to advise Council and recommend policies on parks, trails and recreation matters, including services, facilities and specific community interests. The commitment is a 1-year term. The advisory committee meets on the 4th Wednesday of every month at 4:00 p.m., with the exception of July, August and December when there are no meetings.
