NEW TODAY

We are installing 8 additional bike racks.  2 bike locks are connected to the back stop fence by the rugby field.  These locks will be removed this morning to allow for installation of a storage locker.  Bikes locked to fences will be ticketed starting MONDAY.

 STEM Fellowship UVic will be in the Career Centre at lunch on Wednesday January 24thSTEM Fellowship UVic is a club focused on inspiring young students to pursue post-secondary studies in sciences and engineering and showing them the gratification and benefit to society that can come from studying sciences.  They will present a brief, approximately 30 minute presentation for any students interested in what the sciences at post-secondary (and specifically UVic) are like, what they can benefit from studying them, and how to succeed in post-secondary in general. As STEM Fellowship has branches at several other universities across Canada, including the University of British Columbia and the University of Toronto, we have an established network that could help many students find out about schools of their interest.

A local resident is looking for Social Media assistance Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.  Minimum wage is offered. Hours are based on students availability and the task is to get each account streamlined, organize data to post. Please see Mrs. Giesbrecht if you would like the contact information for this position.

On February 28, 2018, schools across Canada will be recognizing PINK SHIRT DAY, which symbolizes a stand against bullying. Please see the link for more information https://www.pinkshirtday.ca

In support of this, students, parents, teachers and staff have the opportunity to purchase a PINK SHIRT for just $6 and/or a BANDANA for $4. You can place your order online here or see Ms. Adams in the Accounts office. Orders must be placed by JANUARY 31, 2018.
T-shirts and Bandanas will be delivered to our school on or by February 27th and can be collected from the school office.

 Senior girls soccer: Any girls interested in playing Senior Girls Soccer, we will have our first drop-in indoor session next Monday (January 22) in the big gym after school. Please see Miss McKinty if you can’t make it.

Our junior girls basketball team played another strong defensive game in a 37-36 win over Belmont.  The Breakers host SMU today at 5:45pm.

Congratulations to the ski and snowboard team on an awesome first race day at Mt. Washington.  The boys’ ski team won this Island event – Logan Rampton in 2nd, Griffin Hart in 3rd, Adam Whittaker in 4th, closely followed by Marcus Forrester-Houggard, and John & Chris Horwood.  The girls’ ski team was second with fast races by the top 4 girls.  A special congratulations to Brie Neufeld who won the girls’ snowboarding division, and to Jack Boden who placed 4th in boys’ snowboarding.

There will be an Oak Bay Volunteer Fair Saturday January 20th from 1:30 -4:00 pm at Monterey Recreation Centre.  Discover the variety of volunteer opportunities for adults and teens in Oak Bay.  Meet Local community service organizations; learn how you can get involved and make a difference!  There will be door prizes, refreshments and live music.

Xavier Pelletier High School Internship Program (Grade 11 – School nominated) The High School Internship Program (HSIP) is an 8-week summer program that runs in July-August each summer at the BC Cancer Agency’s Trev and Joyce Deeley Research Center in Victoria. This program has been designed to offer students the opportunity to explore cancer research from the front lines, learning the latest techniques in the fight against cancer today and setting the ground for the future. Each student will be responsible for a research project, which they will develop and implement from start to finish with continual support from a designated supervisor and a team of research scientists. All Secondary schools on Vancouver Island are eligible to nominate (2) Grade 11 students. Students must take Biology 11 or 12 in grade 11 to be eligible. Oak Bay selects its 2 nominees in February. Interested students are asked to Mrs. Giesbrecht in the Career Centre for more information.

The Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue formerly the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary (Pacific) is a volunteer organization of over 1,000 people from many backgrounds who give up a great deal of their own time to train, be trained, and be on standby, in case they are needed to respond to a marine emergency on the water.
