TODAY, at lunch the Cultural Connection will be holding a small Carnaval d’hiver in honor of the French Canadian Festival.  Answer a trivia question or say a few words in French to win a traditional “snow” candy!

A reminder to everyone interested in playing senior girls soccer, tryouts will be TODAY after school. Please be on the turf, ready to go at 3:15.

Reminder that the School of Health Information Science is hosting its Spring Open House on Thursday, February 8th, 4:30-6:00pm at the University of Victoria’s Hickman Building room 110.

A reminder to all Math students that the deadline for committing to write the Pascal, Cayley or Fermat contest, is this Friday, Feb. 9. Please let your Math teacher know so that a contest can be ordered for you.

Tennis 2018 informational meeting is Friday, Feb 9th at lunch in 309.  All welcome.

Our Jr Girls BBall team’s season came to an end yesterday in a 44-36 loss to Pacific Christian. The team played very well defensively led by Julia Preston who limited the effectiveness of PC’s point guard. The offence really struggled in passing the ball but Delaney Chan stepped up with her best shooting game of the season, scoring 16 points. The Girls end up finishing 5th in the Victoria City Tournament and their season record was 12 wins and 8 losses.

Chinese New Year Celebration Dinner

To celebrate Chinese New Year/ Lunar New Year/Spring Festival, the Cultural Connection Club is organizing a dinner open to ALL students.  There will be authentic Chinese food (and possibly Korean food). The Celebration will happen on Monday, February 19th at 6:00pm in room 143.  Come right after school if you want to help our and learn how to cook Chinese food.   Sign-up sheet is outside room 202.

This year, Discover Tectoria will be taking place on Friday, Feb 23rd from 11am to 6pm at the Crystal Gardens. This lands on a Professional Development Day, and VIATEC wants us to spread the word to students and parents!  Discover Tectoria is the Island’s largest tech expo and it’s a great way to spend a Pro-D Day.

Monday was the BEST ski & snowboard race day in Oak Bay’s history.   Both the boys’ and girls’ ski teams are off to Provincials at “Sun Peaks” in Kamloops, along with Brie Neufeld & Jack Boden.

Oak Bay once again had 7 boy skiers in the TOP 12 which is amazing!  A special congrats to Logan Rampton who WON, Griffin Hart who placed 4th, Adam Whittaker in 5th, John Horwood in 7th, Christopher Horwood in 8th, Grayson Gammon in 10th, and Marcus Forrester-Houggard in 12th.  Congratulations “ISLAND CHAMPIONS”.

Our girls’ ski team had their best race of the season and was only one point behind the 1st place team “Mark Isfield”.  Congratulations to Jane Illman for placing 3rd in the girls’ ski event, Lara Hollingsworth in 5th, Molly Pearce in 6th, Julia Morgan  in 9th, Shelby Cain in 15th and Amelia Ellis in 18th.  A special congratulations to Evan Graham who placed 2nd in boys’ snowboarding.  Brie Neufeld once again won the girls’ snowboarding division and is crowned “ISLAND CHAMPION”.

Introduction to the SAT (FREE)

Tuesday, February 27                        7:00-8:00 pm

Copeland Lecture Theatre, SMUS Senior school

This session offers an introduction to the SAT, including test format, Frequently Asked Questions, and registration advice. Students will be guided through the College Board web site, learn one or two test-taking tips, find out about recommended scores for their university of choice, and set some goals and a study schedule to achieve those goals. Students will learn about various different test preparation methods and products, including both independent study, and the formal SMUS SAT Test Prep course.  This intro session is appropriate for students and parents who would like to learn more about the best way to prepare for this high-stakes test.

Are you interested in Graphic Design?

On Thursday, March 1st, explore the world of graphic design at Pacific Design Academy!

Who: Grade 10, 11 and 12 students (16 seats available)

When: March 1st 2018, 9:30am – 1:30pm

Where: Pacific Design Academy

Why: To explore the industry of graphic design through hands-on activities, interactive demonstrations, and discussions

with PDA instructors, students, and local professionals.

What: Accepted students will be expected to make their own way to Pacific Design Academy, need to bring a lunch, notepad and pen. The rest of the materials will be provided.

Deadline for applications is Feb 20th.  Please see Mrs. Giesbrecht if you are interested and would like an application.

Students, It’s not too late to complete math faster. You can complete math during the year and during the summer through Oak Bay amp Program.  See Mr. Spray for details in 309.
