New Today

The first Track and Field practice will be this Wednesday, March 1st right after school at the Oak Bay track. All athletes welcome, as there is an event for EVERYONE. Whether you are interested in learning to high jump, pole vault, hurdle, or race walk, we are always looking to add new team members.  The Track and Field teams second practice will be Monday, March 6th after school at the Oak Bay track.

Any students interested in learning more about the Northwestern Francophone Games, which will be held at Oak Bay High this summer from July 11-15, please come to the theatre during Focus Block on Wednesday March 1 for a presentation about the event. 

Camosun Lansdowne Campus is having a Criminal Justice information session on March 1st from 2:30 – 4:30 pm in the Wilna Thomas building room 224. There will be over 40 Community and Criminal Justice organizations attending.  The event provides the opportunity for students to meet one on one to learn about the agencies, their roles and responsibilities, and career information.  It is informal and a great way to explore all of the organization attending.

March 2nd – Federal Student Work Experience Summer Program (FSWEP) will have a table set up outside the Career Centre at lunch. Students will have the opportunity to learn more about the trades they can be involved with over the summer on the Fleet Maintenance Facility, such as Metal trades, hull trades, pipefitter, refrigeration, electrician, machinist and millwright.

March 8th – Royal Canadian Navy – Canadian Armed Forces will have a table set up outside the Career Centre at lunch.

DISTRICT SUMMER PROGRAMS

Graphic Design Summer Program
SD61 and Pacific Design Academy are partnering together to offer an amazing 4-week program for students interested in exploring the graphic design industry.  This program will provide students with a foundation of graphic design knowledge in Adobe InDesign/Photoshop/Illustrator, and the opportunity to advance their soft skills, life experience and passion for the industry.  The program runs in July at Pacific Design Academy (exact dates TBD), Monday – Friday, 8:30am – 3:30pm. Upon successful completion of the program, students will acquire 4 high school credits.  See Ms. Giesbrecht in the Career Centre to apply.

Tourism & Leadership Exploration Summer Program – Do you love the outdoors?
SD61 and West Coast Adventure College have partnered together to offer an amazing 8-week summer program for students interested in exploring the Adventure Tourism Industry. The TALE Program (Tourism and Leadership Exploration) provides students with a foundational knowledge in wilderness first aid, navigation, leadership and communication skills, risk management, trip planning and survival skills. Upon completion of the program, students will acquire 8 high school credits and an invaluable connection with local tourism companies through a 4-week work experience placement.
The program runs in July and August (exact dates TBD), Monday – Friday, 8:30am – 3:30pm with the following schedule:
July: Local Victoria Parks & Trails, Uplands Campus
August: Work Experience with Local Companies

Seed The City is an 8 week summer urban farming and gardening program for high school students. Students earn high school credits while gaining business and customer service skills. The program takes place Tuesday to Thursday from July 4th to August 24th.  Please see the attached link for more detailed information.  https://oakbaycareercentre.weebly.com/news–events  Interested students can pick up an application from Ms. Giesbrecht in the Career Centre and the deadline to return it is April 21st.

Just a reminder to all students who drive to school.  Please be mindful that the parking lots located at the front of the school and the rear of the school, by the gymnasium, are for staff only.  Student parking is adjacent the track, at the end of Goldsmith Ave.  Please also remember to obey speed limits while in the proximity of the school as we have been receiving complaints from our neighbors.  Thank-you!

Have you already completed Calc 12?  tspray is looking for math12 Calc 12 TAs.  Come and make a difference and take your understanding to the next level.
Have you finished a math course at Oak Bay. The math department needs your help.  We are looking for students who want to make a difference in our school to support learning in our classrooms.  Please see your past math teacher for details OR come and see tspray in 309 and we will set it up.  You can TA for credit, volunteer hours, a reference letter or because it is just plain rewarding.    The TA program is very flexible and can work around your skills and interests.

Pedalheads is hiring is a camp which teaches kids from the ages of 3-12 to ride their bikes.   The Spring Break camp will be held at Braefoot Elementary. They are hiring instructors and are flexible with regards to whether instructors are available to work just one or both weeks.  To qualify as a bike instructor, students need to be turning 16 in the calendar year.  https://oakbaycareercentre.weebly.com/job–volunteer
