COME TO THE SD61 CAREER FAIR AND SIGN UP TO WIN AN IPAD.
SD61 is having their annual Career Fair on April 19th from 9:00am to 2:30pm at Archie Browning Curling Arena, 1151 Esquimalt Rd.  Students will take a bus leaving from Oak Bay at 11:15 and returning to the school by 12:45. There will be approximately 80 exhibitors attending and more committing to the event each day. See the current list here.   All Oak Bay students are welcome to attend. To sign up, see Mrs. Giesbrecht in the Career Centre.

BOOT GAME!  Come watch the Barbs Rugby team win back the coveted “Boot” versus our long time rival SMUS.  TODAY, 6:30pm at Wallace Field at UVic.

Teachers – Please allow the Junior Boys Rugby Team to leave class 15 minutes early today.

Starting TOMORROW, Mrs. Yarr is teaching Food Safe in Blocks 3, 4, 5, 6, & 7.  Anyone who wants Food Safe certification who has a spare is welcome to attend and enjoy the deep Oak Bay discount.  Certification is $30.00 to Mrs. Adams.

Wednesday, April 18th, join the Cultural Connection Club and come try Bollywood dancing after school.  Bollywood Beats Victoria will be coming in to give Oak Bay students a free Bollywood dance lesson from 3:10-4:10pm in the Dance Studio.  No dance experience required.

Federal Student Work Experience Summer Program
FSWEP is an opportunity for students to take part working in a trade over the summer.  Students will earn approximately $11.50  per hour from July 3rd to August 31.  Please see Mrs. Giesbrecht for an application and a description of the trade duties.     Applications are due into Mrs. Giesbrecht on April 25th.
​The trades offered are:
-Various Metal Trades (Metal Fabrication, Sheet Metal & Welding)
-Various Hull Trades (Shipwright/Joiner, Painter, Lagger, Electroplater & Rigger)
-Electrician (Marine & Weapons)
-Machinist
-Millwright
Program Requirements
Applicants must meet the following requirements in order to be admitted to the Fleet Maintenance Facility – CAPE BRETON – FSWEP Program.
-Be between 16 – 19 years of age and currently enrolled in grade 11 or 12.
-Have their parent’s/guardian’s written permission.
-Demonstrate an interest, aptitude and a level of maturity suitable for a trade with the Department of National Defence.
Successful candidates must secure a “Reliability Status” security clearance

Volunteer Opportunity

Volunteer Opportunity with Canucks Autism Network.  They run a highly supported sports and recreation activities for children, teens and young adults with autism.  It is a great opportunity for students to see how different each of our participants on the autism spectrum are and the support strategies we use.  Volunteer roles include: set up/take down of equipment, support using visuals, support staff with participants and enthusiastic participants in the activities.  We have online training that teaches about Autism Spectrum Disorder and we also have an onsite supervisor at every session to help with hands on learning.  Moreover, our programs are really fun and interactive and take place outside of school hours. Students are free to contact Julie by email Julie.ball@canucksautism.ca or there is an application form on the website https://www.canucksautism.ca/join-us/become-a-volunteer/

Margaret Jenkins needs volunteers to help out with their year-end celebration on June 27th.
They are looking for…4-6 students to work outside the gym from 12:30pm – 3:30pm.
– help to decorate and set up
– serve cake, and help with coffee
– help with the photo booth & dress-ups
– supervise recycling and compost

Do you still need volunteer hours for your Grad Transitions or Community Leadership class?  Mrs. Giesbrecht is still looking for volunteers for the Career Fair on April 19th.  There are three shifts to choose from. (7:30 – 9:30 am, 11:00 am – 1:30 pm, and 2:00 – 4:00 pm)  Come by the Career Centre to sign up.

Canadian Blood Services is looking for volunteers.  Earn your 30 hours by supporting the community.  Contact dragana.nikolic@blood.ca if you are interested.

The 75th Swiftsure International Yacht Race is looking for volunteers from May 24-28, 2018.

Graduation Transitions Course deadline is April 23rd.
A reminder that the deadline to complete the Grad Transitions requirements is April 23rd.  This deadline is for attending the Grad dinner dance – tickets will be refunded if your GT is not complete.
Please see Mr. Alexander during focus block this week (11th & 12th) in the Cafeteria for those of you who are unclear of what the requirements for GT are.

Grade 12’s participating in the Graduation Ceremony on June 6th, 2018 please check the list outside the office.  Your Oak Bay High Certificate will be printed with your “usual first and last name.”  If you would like a different name (formal/legal name etc.) printed on your certificate, please see Ms. S by FRIDAY, APRIL 13thYour Dogwood Certificate will have your LEGAL NAME printed on it.

TRANSCRIPT Information:  You can access your transcript online now, to see information for yourself or for picking post-secondary institutions to order and send to.  No need to have a paper copy now J.  Go to the Ministry of Education’s Transcripts and Certificate website at http://www.StudentTranscripts.gov.bc.ca.  If you have any questions go and see Mr. Alexander or Mrs. Giesbrecht.
